From April 9, 2025, visitors can explore the exhibition “Master MS and His Era” (“MS mester és kora”), uncovering one of Hungary’s most influential late medieval artists—known only as Master MS—and his era. The centerpiece of the exhibition is the former High Altar from the Church of St. Catherine in Selmecbánya (Banská Štiavnica), with seven surviving monumental panels displayed together for the first time.
A Window to the Past
With nearly 100 artworks, the exhibition combines maps, models, historical artifacts, and original documents. This immersive presentation offers a sweeping view of Master MS’s creative world, the regions that shaped his style, and Hungarian history from the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Visitors will discover not only his most iconic pieces but also several newly identified works attributed to him.
The Artist’s Secret Identity
Curators add extra intrigue by proposing new theories about one of Hungarian art history’s biggest mysteries: Who was really hidden behind the cryptic MS monogram?
