Every year, Szentendre’s Skanzen (Open-Air Museum) bursts with life for the St. Martin New Wine Festival and Goose Feast (Szent Márton Újborfesztivál és Libator). From November 8-9, 2025, the open-air museum’s houses buzz with tradition, from wine tasting and lavish goose feasts to hands-on crafting sessions where visitors create symbols of the autumn festivities. The iconic lantern parade, a favorite among both children and adults, once again lights up the festival after dark.
Centuries-Old Traditions
St. Martin’s cult has flourished for hundreds of years in Hungary, as peasants, soldiers, winemakers, coopers, horse keepers, and goose keepers all honored him as their patron. His day marked the end of the farming year and was celebrated nationwide as a shepherds’ festival, with new wine ready and geese fattened for the ultimate feast. This “little carnival” period was the year’s last big party before the church’s fasting season, filled with fun, weddings, and dances.
