Nestled in Keszthely’s breathtaking scenery, Festetics Palace (Festetics Kastély) and its exhibition venues are preparing to host a vibrant series of programs in 2025, promising something for everyone. Forget dull museum tours—this summer and fall, the palace becomes a playground for curious kids, engaged adults, and culture connoisseurs alike.
Block-Building Dreams & Interactive Fun
From August 25 to 31, the “World of Blocks” Exhibition at the Amazon House Visitor Center (Amazon House Látogatóközpont) transforms simple toy bricks into dazzling dioramas. Let nostalgia sweep you away as you spot Pirate Island, the whimsical Friends universe in both winter and summer, custom-built sailing ships, Wild West heroes, and a jaw-dropping Star Wars battle scene on the icy planet Hoth. It’s a lively celebration for families, igniting memories and unleashing creativity.
Throughout the same week, the Historical Playhouse (Történelmi Játszóház) hosts theme days designed to inform and entertain. On August 28, animal lovers are challenged with a playful quiz—think you know what a male cat is called? On August 29, an indoor-outdoor treasure hunt invites energetic exploration. The last weekend of August ramps up the excitement: August 30 features an interactive murder mystery (already sold out!) in the opulent halls, searching for Hungary’s top 50 private detectives. On the same day, a UNO Party tests your speed in shedding cards, while Green Day brings eco-creativity with upcycling crafts, napkin art, and pebble painting.
Elegance and Autumn Nights
Gearheads and style-seekers converge for the Festetics Concours d’Elegance on September 6–7. This classic car beauty contest spotlights pre-1960 vehicles, marrying automotive history with the palace’s old-world glamour. A week later, the “Autumn Night of Museums” (Múzeumok Őszi Éjszakája) on September 20 invites night owls to explore exhibitions in a different light, with exclusive evening access.
Beyond the Castle: Lake Balaton Activities Galore
The palace is just the starting point. During summer, from June 1 to August 31, Lake Balaton’s (Balaton) shores echo with outdoor play sessions and scenic pleasure cruises departing straight from the harbor—perfect for those craving sun, water, and relaxation. Guided canoe tours through the Little Balaton (Kis-Balaton) marshes, as well as nature hikes to the István Fekete Memorial (Fekete István Emlékhely) and Uncle Matula’s legendary hut (Matula bácsi kunyhója) on Diás Island (Diás-sziget), run from late August through mid-October, offering close encounters with wetland wildlife and literary landmarks.
On August 31, comedy fans can catch Péter Aranyosi’s solo evening performance. September brings two more outdoor play weeks and pleasure cruises, plus continued guided excursions into the mysteries of Little Balaton (Kis-Balaton).
The Arts in Full Flow
A creative surge hits in September courtesy of the Flow Balaton group’s multidisciplinary exhibition debuting on the 5th. From September 11 to 14, the 23rd Keszthely Dance Panorama presents dazzling choreography, with tickets ranging from $10 to $17. Look out for the Dezső Fitos Ensemble’s (Fitos Dezső Társulat) “Transylvania Express” and its retrospective photo exhibit. September 13 features Café Brasil presented by GG Dance Eger (GG Tánc Eger), and the Szeged Contemporary Ballet’s (Szegedi Kortárs Balett) take on “Scenes from a Marriage” arrives on September 14, with tickets up to $19.
Meanwhile, kids and the young-at-heart can enjoy the Yvette Bozsik Company’s (Bozsik Yvette Társulat) staging of “Hansel and Gretel,” while history buffs might prefer a lecture on Keszthely’s three-towered church.
Cultural Cruises, Comedy, and Science
Saturdays in September and October are marked by Culture Boat rides aboard the BAHART “Helka” nostalgia steamer. Themed events shift gears from dance to stand-up: major acts include Zorán’s 2025 tour (tickets: $45), Péter Janklovics’ comedy night on September 25 ($16–$19), and Dániel Mogács’ “Ego” stand-up show with Viktor Fülöp on October 16 (same price range). In November, László Mérő tackles “Artificial Intelligence” in a science stand-up session ($24–$25).
Ongoing Adventures and Seasonal Programs
Each week through autumn, children and adults can revel in “Outdoor Play,” extensive palace programs, and lake cruises on repeat. Upholstery workshops, literary lectures (such as Ildikó Szilasi’s “Colorful Africa”), astronomical viewings of a total lunar eclipse, and even a one-act Peter Pan musical all pop up on the calendar.
By October’s end, board game sessions, more canoe and hiking expeditions, and enlightening talks complete this cultural feast—making Festetics Palace (Festetics Kastély) and Keszthely (Keszthely) the region’s party hotspot well into November.
