Every autumn in the Hortobágy (Hortobágy), animals are herded in from the endless plains as the cold sets in, honoring an age-old tradition. This unique spectacle, where Racka sheep, Nonius horses, buffalo carts, and majestic Grey cattle (Magyar szürke szarvasmarha) march toward their winter shelter, unfolds for all to witness—and it’s a sight that amazes every generation.
Festival Vibes & Local Delicacies
On October 25th, don’t just come for the procession—immerse yourself in the vibrant St. Demetrius Herding Festival and Crane Festival, which blend folk customs, hands-on crafts, and market stalls filled with artisanal goods. Live performances fill the Pásztor Museum (Pásztormúzeum) square: musical acts, street theater, and fun shows for kids. The Crane Kitchen (Darukonyha) recipe contest and the Crane Porch decorating competition showcase local rivalries and creativity.
All-Day Activities & Feast
