Remembering the 1956 Revolution

On October 23, Balatonfüred honors the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 with a series of commemorations around town. Ceremonies take place from 9:30 AM (Tagore Promenade, Bibó Statue) through the early evening, including special speeches, musical tributes, and wreath-laying. In case of rain, the events move to Christ the King Parish Church. There’s also an ecumenical prayer at the cemetery at 6 PM.

Cruise into Autumn

From October 23 to 26, and again from October 27 to November 2, pleasure boats set sail from the port, offering peaceful autumn lake views and a chance to relax in the heart of Lake Balaton—don’t miss this opportunity if you love cruising in brisk, sweater weather.

Theater, Kids’ Nature Show, and More

On October 24, Balatonfüred Congress Center presents Jóanyád! – Szülői szerepben a B oldalon (“Your Mother! – In the Parental Role on the B Side”), a play about the humor and drama of parenting.

Parents and children are invited at 10 AM that Friday to Bogárháton (On Beetleback), a nature-themed performance at Arács Community House (Arácsi Népház). Expect stories, fun, and plenty of fascination with autumn’s natural wonders.

Bikes, Dance, and Wine Night on October 25

The region’s biggest fall cycling event, the 7th Balaton Uplands Autumn Bike Tour (VII. Balaton-felvidéki Őszi Bringa Túra), gets rolling on October 25. Riders traverse a 40-mile loop (65 km) across the scenic Balaton Uplands, passing through picturesque villages and even Veszprém. Most of the route follows smooth, secure cycle paths, with nearly 500 participants expected from across Hungary. Registration runs from 8–9:45 AM at the Leisure and Conference Center (Szabadidő és Konferencia Központ), where the tour also begins and ends. The adventure kicks off at 10 AM and wraps up by late afternoon with a prize drawing.

If cycling isn’t your thing, check out the Balaton Cup Spectacle Dance Competition (Balaton Kupa Látványtánc) at the same venue.

Wine lovers are in for a treat at 7 PM with “Winemaker in the House” (Borász a házban)—a crimson-themed wine evening at Karolina Café & Cocktail Bar. Tamás Riczu, famed for his award-winning premium Villány reds, will present wines ranging from delicate and light to full-bodied treasures. No reservations are required—just show up and toast the weekend!

Sunday: Literary Breakfast and More

On October 26 at Borcsa Restaurant, enjoy a Krúdy–Jókai “gábli”—a vintage-style literary brunch with live readings by actor Péter Kálloy Molnár and favorite melodies of classic authors like Krúdy and Jókai, performed by Zoltán Kalló and Ferenc Jehoda. The event features a multi-course Hungarian brunch for $37 (14,000 HUF).

Halloween Festivities for All

From October 27 to 31, the Gábor Lipták City Library (Lipták Gábor Városi Könyvtár) hosts Autumn Break activities for kids, including a moderately difficult five-mile (8 km) nature hike, a 3D movie (with glasses provided), and LEGO play hours run by the Balaton–Bakony Brick Club. Craft sessions and an extended playroom schedule make the week a haven for young creators.

October 31 welcomes the annual Halloween Family Day—a celebration of pumpkin carving, face painting, crafts, and a pumpkin beauty contest at the Huray Villa garden.

Are you talented at baking spooky treats? Enter the legendary Halloween Baking Contest at the Tourinform office (drop off entries from 9–10 AM), where a three-person professional jury (from leading local patisseries) will sample creations for creativity, flavor, and Halloween flair. Categories for kids and adults, with prizes awarded at 3 PM. Sweet or savory, traditional or bizarre—the only requirement is a dash of Halloween magic! Leftover tastings are open to the public, supporting event costs with an honesty box.

Weekly film programs continue at Balatonfüred’s cinema from late October through mid-November, including special club screenings of banned and censored films.
