Tuesdays are for weaving at the Sóstó Museum Village (Sóstói Múzeumfalu) in Nyíregyháza, at the Beszterec (Besztereci) homestead, where anyone can try their hand at a craft that once defined everyday life. You’ll learn the basics, make a small rag rug, and yes — you get to take your “masterpiece” home.
Old-school craft, new hands
In traditional village life, weaving was women’s work. Even after factory-made textiles took over, people kept weaving rag blankets from torn clothing — a clever way to reuse what was worn out. Those colorful, striped rugs and covers hid the oven ledge or bench, and in the stable they doubled as blankets or sheets. The workshop keeps that spirit alive with practical, hands-on learning through a compact, beginner-friendly project.
Quick, cozy, and affordable
Duration: 50 minutes. Group size: up to 30. Price: $1.35 per person. Bring friends, try the loom, and walk away with something you made — and a bit of living heritage in your bag.
