All About the Black Cherry

Szomolya’s original, ancient landrace—the Szomolya short‑stem black cherry (Szomolyai rövidszárú fekete cseresznye)—grows only here and in its immediate surroundings, where its physical, chemical, and biological qualities peak. Ripening by mid‑June, the fruit is loaded with flavonoids. It’s virtually jet‑black, with a medium‑thick, resilient skin; flesh that’s blackish burgundy‑red, semi‑firm, and very juicy; and juice that stains intensely. Sweet, aromatic, and considered one of Hungary’s most flavorful cherry varieties.

Eat, Listen, Wander

Taste legendary cherry pastries, sample local delicacies, then switch gears with concerts and maker stalls. Craving movement? Hike out to the Beehive Rocks (Kaptárkövek) rock formations. Dates: June 6–7, 2026. Location: Szomolya, 3411, at several sites.
