Every Saturday from 10:00 to noon, the gates of Pécs Brewery (Pécsi Sörfőzde) swing open for a behind-the-scenes tour that blends brewing history with a guided tasting. It’s hands-on, friendly, and built for people who want to understand their beer as much as they enjoy drinking it—right in Pécs, at 7600, Tavasz Street (Tavasz utca) 13.
Visitors step into the country’s oldest operating brewery, where staff walk you through the full brewing journey, from mash to fermentation. The tour finishes in a showroom where you’ll taste the lineup under the guidance of a specialist. Registration is required, and spots are confirmed only after you receive a reply. Tours run based on the number of participants, with group flexibility built in: if you’re a party of more than 15, weekday slots can be arranged too.
Price is 4,000 HUF per person (about 10.98 USD) and includes the guided tasting. You’ll need to sign up by Thursday at 20:00 for that Saturday. Include your planned group size when you email. The brewery runs these Saturday visits all winter and spring—and into early summer—so you can plan around holidays or travel.

Stay the Weekend
If you’re planning to stretch this into a city break, Pécs has a deep bench of accommodation. Adele Boutique Hotel Pécs is a four-star spot in a 19th-century protected building right in the historic center; rooms and apartments balance classic and contemporary design at an upscale level. Barbakán Hotel sits behind Pécs Cathedral and offers 16 three-star rooms (doubles, triples, and quads), plus a conference room and garage. There’s also a family-run guesthouse in the quiet villa district above the city on the Mecsek hillside—close to forest trails, the zoo, and the Mandulás recreation area. Group stays can even include free guided hikes.
For something with character, Bagolyvár on Havihegy overlooks Pécs and faces the Zengő side, with tranquil views and a concept that weaves Hungarian folk art into 19 unique rooms and six presshouse-inspired suites, each themed around a famous Hungarian wine. It’s peaceful, scenic, and designed for a slow exhale.
Boutique Hotel Sopianae drops you into the city center with a clever contrast: a heritage exterior wrapped around a modern interior, with personalized service and a discreet, homey feel. There’s also an apartment hotel near the UNESCO-listed Early Christian Necropolis and the Cathedral, plus a refurbished baroque former convent from around 1870 in the heart of Pécs that now houses a fully modern lodging option. Another centrally located hotel sits a short walk from the Knowledge Centre (Tudásközpont) and the Kodály Centre (Kodály Központ) concert hall—quiet, green, and handy for culture lovers.
Eat and Sip Around Town
Pécs turns a brewery day into a full-on food crawl. For sweets, Angyali Kísértés Chocolate (Angyali Kísértés Csokoládé) is your stop for chocolates, bonbons, and homestyle pastries. Craving hearty plates with friends? A lively local eatery dishes everything from fried, grilled, and stuffed meats to brassói, fish courses, oven-baked dishes, risottos, classic pastas, flatbreads, and a long pizza list—plus salads, soups, and desserts. In the city center, a traditional kitchen serves changing daily menus at solid prices, opening from 8 a.m. with foamy coffees, sandwiches, homemade pogácsa, and hand-stretched rétes. They also handle standing receptions and small events, on- or off-site.
Aranykacsa Restaurant (Aranykacsa Étterem) leans into local ingredients and modern technique in a warm setting. Wine tastings run in the Vinarium (Vinárium), while the Tüke room is your casual wine, beer, and dining space. The Zsolnay room hosts family and protocol meals, and the upstairs Dakk hall and garden are geared to wedding dinners, banquets, and birthdays. Bagolyvár doubles as a classic Hungarian restaurant with stylish decor and a specialty in old-school Hungarian dishes and desserts.
There’s a bistro right at the gateway to the Balkans—fresh, home-style flavors, relaxed plating, and good value—while Big Bell Restaurant (Big Bell Étterem) adds a small craft show brewery and a beer garden. Bohemia Beer Kitchen (Bohemia Sörkonyha) in the city center keeps it tight with Beer – Burger – BBQ. For fast, affordable weekday meals, Borostyán Fast Food (Borostyán Gyorsétterem) on Király Street (Király utca) serves 11:00–16:00, Monday to Friday. And PAULUS shapeshifts from café in the morning to self-service restaurant at noon and a pub in the evening, with events folded in.
