when: 2025.12.29., Monday
where: 2025 Visegrád, Vár

Every Saturday, Visegrád brings the Middle Ages roaring back to life with a full-throttle knights’ tournament at the Solomon Tower (Salamon-torony) and a regal feast at the Renaissance Restaurant. It’s a one-of-a-kind experience in Hungary, and it’s hands-on from the start: the knights select a king and queen from the audience, robe them in royal cloaks, crown them, and let the games begin.

Armored action at the Solomon Tower

At the king’s command, the knights of the Order of Saint George parade in and show off their aim and dueling skills with authentic medieval weapons, performing thrilling, sometimes cheeky reenactments of 14th-century Visegrád’s bravest warriors battling for royal favor. A royal hunting hawk takes flight to spice up the show, and at the end guests can try medieval weapons with the knights’ help.

Pros
+
Family-friendly and interactive: kids can be picked as “royalty,” see a hawk fly, and even try safe versions of medieval weapons
+
Great value for money by European standards: ~$10 for the tournament or under $40 with a big multi-course feast
+
The subject is universally appealing—knights, armor, and medieval duels are easy to enjoy without deep background knowledge
+
Visegrád is a well-known day-trip spot from Budapest (Danube Bend), so many foreign visitors already include it on itineraries
+
No Hungarian needed: the visual action carries the show, staff are used to tourists, and basic English guidance is common
+
Easy logistics from Budapest: about 60–75 minutes by bus from Újpest-Városkapu or by car via the scenic Danube Bend; simple meet-up at Solomon Tower at noon
+
Compared with medieval dinner shows in the US or Western Europe, this feels more authentic and less kitschy, with real historical setting and prices that are gentler on the wallet
Cons
Limited schedule (Saturdays only), so timing has to line up with your trip
The location name “Visegrád” isn’t as globally famous as Budapest or Prague, so you might need to research transport and exact meeting point
The feast menu is hearty and set; picky eaters, vegetarians, or those with dietary restrictions may find choices limited and drinks aren’t included
Terrain and tower access can involve steps and uneven surfaces, which may be tricky for strollers or limited mobility travelers
