A decommissioned air-defense rocket base turned military heritage site in Zsámbék is opening its 15-hectare grounds for a year of family-friendly adventures in 2026. Expect open-air exploration across bunkers, blast shelters, exhibitions, military vehicles, pistol and assault rifle shooting, surprises, challenges, and memorable views. The site is open year-round by registration, and on designated dates without prior sign-up.
New Year’s Group Visit
Kick off the season with a no-registration group tour on January 2, 2026, starting at 10:00. The group sets off on time regardless of headcount. Arrive punctually—if you’re more than 5 minutes late, you can’t join. The 2-hour walk covers one of the former MN1159 Home Air Defense Rocket Battalion’s firing positions: a radar post, rocket launch pads, a “cycloid” cover, and the underground command post. You’ll glimpse the combat routines of air-defense crews, climb a shelter for panoramic views, tour the one-of-a-kind Rocket Exhibition, and finish at the former readiness building. Expect outdoor terrain and underground bunkers; dress in layers for the weather. Boots aren’t required. The tour returns to the base gate around noon.
Practicalities
Facilities: Restrooms available; no buffet. Parking is available inside the Rocket Base and in front of the gate. Navigate by entering “Zsámbék Rakétabázis” into your route planner for precise directions. Entry fee is about $5.50 per person; free for children under 6. Donations to support the base’s upkeep are gratefully received.
Entry Conditions
– The base was never designed for visitors; despite all safety efforts, entry is strictly at your own risk.
– Beyond Cold War history, living-history groups present various nations and eras, so authoritarian symbols may be visible.
