Expect gastro-adventures and panoramic views on the shore of Old Lake (Öreg-tó), where heritage architecture meets modern hospitality and a buzzing events calendar.

January: Sex Ed Cabaret for Grown-Ups

On 2026.01.14, SzexEd: Kabaré felnőtteknek, a sex education cabaret, tackles awkward, funny, and all-too-real questions: How do you actually get there? Is daily too much? Is it normal if it hurts? How many inches of hair are acceptable? When do you pull out the condom? No mood, too cringe, too complicated? The show dives into failures and pleasures alike through characters including the hair demon, the hormone creature, the bodily-fluid spirit, the cringe pixie, the virgin ghost, the size squad, and the two leads, Vasz and Bina. It’s candid, cheeky, and designed for adults who want straight answers with a laugh. Location: Tata.

February: A Gulag Diary Comes Alive

On 2026.02.11, Andrea Fullajtár takes the stage with Babilon dosszié (Babylon Dossier), a gripping monodrama built from Olga Galló’s camp diary and her fight to get it published during the Kádár era. Olga Galló wasn’t one to give up; what she couldn’t fully tell emerges with raw intimacy in her granddaughter Fullajtár’s performance. The script draws from Galló’s manuscript for Ten Months in Babylon (Tíz hónap Babilon) and her correspondence, shaping a uniquely personal night of memory, resistance, and survival. Location: Tata.

Pros
+
Lakeside setting on Old Lake is gorgeous and chill, perfect for sunset dinners and strolls
+
Variety-packed lineup (theater, concerts, exhibitions, workshops, food) means there’s something most weeks
+
Easy date-night or weekend escape vibe with boutique suites right on-site
+
Comparable to trendy cultural hubs in small European towns—think foodie venue meets indie theater—so it feels special, not touristy
+
Tata is close to Budapest, so a day trip by car is straightforward and public transport (train+walk/taxi) is doable
+
Staff at similar venues often speak English; you can navigate booking, dining, and basics without Hungarian
+
Birding and heritage-mill architecture add a unique, Instagram-friendly twist you won’t get at standard city theaters - Not super family-friendly: January’s “Sex Ed Cabaret” is adults-only and themes skew mature
Cons
The venue and Tata aren’t internationally famous, so first-timers may need extra planning and expectations set
Hungarian-language performances likely dominate; without surtitles, non-speakers may miss nuance
Public transport at night can be sparse; returning to Budapest late might require a car or pricey taxi
