Pros
+
Big, affordable fun for families—cheap tickets, kid-sized skates, and penguin walkers make it easy for beginners
+
Open long hours (even past midnight on New Year’s), so you can fit it around sightseeing
+
Family vibe on the Karos Promenade with Advent programs and concerts nearby, so non-skaters won’t be bored
+
Easy on the wallet compared to U.S. rinks; day tickets without time limits are rare
+
English not essential—prices, rentals, and basics are straightforward, and staff at tourist spots usually manage
+
Driving is simple with Hungary’s good roads; public buses reach Zalakaros from larger hubs like Nagykanizsa
+
Unique small-town winter feel versus crowded big-city rinks; more local, less touristy - Zalakaros isn’t internationally famous, so it’s not a bucket-list destination for most U.S. visitors
Cons
Public transport can be multi-leg (Budapest train/bus connections), slower than big-city venues
Occasional maintenance closures and “use at your own risk” rules can interrupt your skate
Compared with iconic rinks (NYC, Vienna, Prague), the setting is less spectacular and the rink smaller
