Savor tradition at Nyíregyháza’s Disznótoros Festival: Mangalica pork, folk flavors, and live competition at Sóstói Múzeumfalu. Taste hurka, kolbász, and more on February 14, 2026.
when: 2026.02.14., Saturday
where: 4431 Nyíregyháza, Skanzen utca 8.
2026.02.14., Skanzen utca 8., 4431 Nyíregyháza — the Disznótoros Festival (Disznótoros Fesztivál) is back, reviving the full village pig-slaughter vibe at the Sóstó Open-Air Museum (Sóstói Múzeumfalu) in Sóstógyógyfürdő. An authentic setting, bold flavors, top-notch tradition-keeping, and nonstop good cheer take over one of Hungary’s most popular open-air ethnographic museums. This time, instead of on-site butchering, split Mangalica pigs arrive from the slaughterhouse and are processed on location for maximum efficiency and taste.
Festival and Competition
It’s the 8th Nyírség Disznótoros Festival and the 24th International Butchers’ Competition, all on February 14, 2026. Competitors cook by folk tradition: onion-fried blood, hurka, kolbász, cracklings, and other pork classics, served with a hefty dose of atmosphere. Visitors can taste their way through the open-air museum’s revived village spread using food tickets.
What to Expect
Thousands of portions will be offered throughout the day. Prizes include audience favorite team, best butcher, best hurka, best toros, best kolbász, best fogópálinka, and best mulled wine. Date: 2026.02.14., location: Nyíregyháza. Organizers reserve the right to change the time and program.
2025, adrienne
Pros
+
Family-friendly vibes at an open-air museum setting—kids can roam, see folk costumes, music, and crafts without the graphic parts of a traditional slaughter
+
Super authentic food experience (hurka, kolbász, cracklings) with tasting tickets, so you can sample widely without committing to full portions
+
Unique cultural deep-dive you won’t easily find in the U.S., especially with the International Butchers’ Competition adding showmanship
+
Hungarian not strictly required—food tickets and visuals make it easy, and staff/younger visitors often speak some English
+
Easy access by car with good regional roads; parking at Sóstógyógyfürdő area is typically manageable on event days
+
Sóstó Open-Air Museum is a well-regarded attraction, so you get the festival plus a scenic “village” backdrop in one go
+
Compared with Oktoberfest-style or U.S. BBQ festivals, this leans more tradition-and-technique than beer bender, making it feel special and culturally richer
Cons
–
Nyíregyháza isn’t as internationally famous as Budapest or Eger, so first-time Hungary visitors may need extra planning and travel time
–
Public transport from Budapest requires a train to Nyíregyháza plus local bus/taxi to Sóstógyógyfürdő—totally doable but not plug-and-play
–
Limited non-pork options; vegetarians and picky eaters might struggle beyond sides, pastries, or mulled wine
–
Announcements, contests, and signage skew Hungarian, so you might miss some nuance without a translation app or local help
