Béla Tarr’s epic Sátántangó (Sátántangó) returns to the big screen on 35mm at Budapest’s (Budapest) Uránia (Uránia) National Film Theatre on January 24, a rare treat after many years off celluloid. The special screening falls under the Celluloid Nights by Cinema Niche banner, restoring the film’s grainy grandeur for one night only.
One Night, Two Breaks, Live Music
The marathon presentation includes two intermissions. During the first break, lead actor and composer Mihály Víg (Mihály Víg) takes the stage for a live performance, bringing the film’s haunting sound world into the room.
A Collective Tribute
Jointly organized by Cirko Film (Cirko Film), the Uránia (Uránia) National Film Theatre, and Cinema Niche (Cinema Niche), the event pays homage to the recently deceased director, whose fiercely uncompromising cinema reshaped modern film language. Sátántangó (Sátántangó), a landmark of slow cinema, is rarely exhibited in its original 35mm format, making this a singular chance to experience its hypnotic rhythms, long takes, and bleakly magnetic atmosphere as intended—projected light on film. Seats are expected to be snapped up fast for this one-off memorial screening.
