On Friday evenings in Budapest, families are invited to a warm, kid-friendly Shabbat welcome while adults dive into learning with Rabbi Glitzi in the synagogue. As the grown-ups listen to Rabbi Glitzi’s teachings, children head to the Zsiliputi playhouse for a mini Shabbat program led by a madricha. The kids dig into the weekly Torah portion, Shabbat traditions, and current holidays through pictures, stories, and lots of games. Those who pay close attention get prizes—and yes, there’s even a raffle. Bring the whole family and let everyone learn something special for Shabbat together.
Friday Night: “Péntekecske” at Zsilip
The Friday night series, dubbed Péntekecske, offers parallel experiences under one roof. Adults get thoughtful teachings in the synagogue with Rabbi Glitzi, while little ones enjoy guided, playful learning next door. The children’s mini Shabbat includes age-appropriate activities about the weekly portion, the meaning of Shabbos, and the seasonal holiday cycle. Visuals keep even the youngest engaged, and the session ends on a high note with rewards for good listening and a lively raffle. It’s a low-pressure, high-joy entry point for families easing into regular Shabbat traditions.

Sunday: Zsiliputi Jewish Sunday School
Sundays bring the relaunch of Zsilip’s beloved children’s program under a new name: Zsiliputi Zsidó Vasárnapi Iskola (Zsiliputi Jewish Sunday School). Hundreds of children who once spent their Sunday mornings at Zsilip still talk about the memories—countless games, friendships, and learning that slipped in as naturally as play. Now it’s back and refreshed at the Zsilip Center, which is outfitted with a two-level playhouse and multiple study rooms to match the energy and needs of every age group.
Who It’s For and What to Expect
From 10:00 to 12:30, a young, enthusiastic team welcomes children and teens ages 4 to 14 for group activities by age. The Sunday School is designed for the whole spectrum: little kids, tweens, those gearing up for youth leadership, and anyone approaching Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Together, the groups prepare for upcoming holidays, learn about mitzvot, explore Jewish traditions, and take in the values meant to guide a lifetime. The focus stays on hands-on discovery—celebration prep, stories, crafts, and teamwork that make learning feel like play.
