Hegymagas sits in the Tapolca Basin at the foot of St. George Hill (Szent György-hegy), just 3.1 miles from Lake Balaton. The tiny village keeps its weekends busy with farmers’ markets, vineyard tastings, and slow-travel stays, all steeped in local wine, gastronomy, and tradition. 2026 brings a packed calendar for anyone chasing volcanic terroir and countryside calm.
Weekly Hegymagas Market
January 31 and every Saturday in February—7, 14, 21, 28—the Hegymagas Market rolls out the flavors of the Badacsony region. Shop directly from local producers, fill your tote with seasonal goods, and chat with makers in the village center. It’s the easiest way to taste the area in one stroll.
All-Night on the Hill
June 6–7, “St. George Hill Until Dawn” (Szent György-hegy hajnalig) keeps the party going until sunrise. Wineries and cellars open late, views sweep across Lake Balaton, and the hill hums with tastings, snacks, and music. Book ahead—beds and tastings go fast.
Stay Local, Sip Local
Kovács Guesthouse welcomes visitors year-round in Hegymagas, a handy base for markets and hilltop trails. Several family wineries on St. George Hill (Szent György-hegy) offer tastings by reservation, often with panoramic terraces and cellar tours. One boutique producer tends a compact 2-by-2-hectare vineyard—small by design for hands-on farming and precision winemaking—with a rare local focus on reds. Their six-wine flight features top estate bottles and runs about two hours; cellar visits are by appointment.
Volcanic Bottles, Vinotheques
On the southern slopes, a 20-hectare family estate pairs winemaking with agritourism and guesthouses. Another micro-cellar leans into artisan, small-batch specialties from distinctive hill-grown varieties, serving tastings designed to linger in the memory. Róbert Gilvesy launched his label in 2012; the vinotheque sells during opening hours and by prior arrangement, and also delivers. Tasting programs are coordinated on request.
From Olaszrizling to Rózsakő
Expect classic whites—olaszrizling, rizlingszilváni, zengő, traminer, riesling (rajnai rizling), chardonnay, rózsakő—plus cellars mixing modern tech with time in oak. Horváth Cellar (Horváth Pince) has welcomed wine lovers since 1996 across 44.5 acres of vines, and Nyári Cellar (Nyári Pince) pours both draft and bottled wine just 656 feet from Tarányi Cellar (Tarányi Pince) and the Lengyel Chapel, with stunning views. The St. George Hill (Szent György-hegy) estate vinotheque opens daily year-round, and from spring to autumn the Viridárium kitchen anchors the refreshed estate center for hungry wine travelers.
