Pros
+
Family-friendly vibe with open-air stalls, live music, and plenty of safe pedestrian space on the Danube Promenade
+
Central location at Vörösmarty Square/Vigadó Square makes it easy to mix books with sightseeing, cafés, and river views
+
English-friendly in Budapest’s tourist core—many publishers, authors, and staff can handle basic queries, and some books/events are in English
+
Super easy to reach: M1 metro to Vörösmarty tér, trams 2/47/49 nearby, rideshares plentiful, and walkable from many hotels
+
Iconic setting along the Danube gives it a “only-in-Budapest” feel compared with indoor book fairs elsewhere
+
Good value compared to big-ticket festivals in London/Frankfurt—free entry vibes, casual browsing, and lots of signings
+
Great timing for a summer trip (mid-June), with long evenings and other cultural events in the city - Many talks/signings are in Hungarian, so deeper panels may be hard to follow without language skills
Cons
The subject (Hungarian contemporary literature) is niche internationally, so fewer globally famous names than at Frankfurt/Edinburgh
Driving/parking in the city center is a pain during events; better to use transit
Can get crowded on weekends, and weather-dependent since it’s mostly outdoors
