Sopron is rolling out a year-long series of free guided city walks in 2026, hosted by the Sopron Tourinform Office at Szent György u. 2. Locals and visitors can explore the city’s landmarks, hear stories from its churches and religious sites, and step into the forests around Sopron to discover local wildlife. Every Saturday, the same signature tour returns, giving you plenty of chances to join in and see Sopron from new angles while keeping your wallet happy. Just call to sign up, then lace up and go.
“On the Shoulders of Giants” — Every Saturday, All Year
The backbone of the program is a weekly walk titled Óriások vállán – híres soproni családok nyomában (On the Shoulders of Giants – In the Footsteps of Famous Sopron Families). It runs every Saturday from February through December 2026, always in Sopron. Dates stretch from February 7 and 14, through every Saturday of March (7, 14, 21, 28) and April (4, 11, 18, 25), then across May (2, 9, 16, 23, 30), June (6, 13, 20, 27), July (4, 11, 18, 25), August (1, 8, 15, 22, 29), September (5, 12, 19, 26), October (3, 10, 17, 24, 31), November (7, 14, 21, 28), and December (5, 12, 19). That’s 44 Saturdays of stories, streets, and history, all for free.
What You’ll See and Learn
Expect a deep dive into Sopron’s layered past and the influential families who shaped it. Guides connect the dots between architecture, faith, and civic life: churches that anchored neighborhoods, religious sites that marked turning points, and the city walls that protected a community for centuries. You’ll pick up anecdotes that make old stones feel alive, plus quiet corners that don’t always appear on standard tourist maps. Beyond the city streets, Sopron’s forest edges come into focus too—local guides point out habitats, seasonal wildlife, and why these green belts matter to the city’s identity.
Where to Start, How to Join
The hub is the Sopron Tourinform Office at Szent György u. 2, in the 9400 postal district. The walks are free and guided, and the easiest way to lock in your place is to call ahead. The program is built to be friendly and flexible—if a Saturday works for you, there’s a tour waiting.
Stay Close: Guesthouses and Pensions Nearby
Sopron’s accommodation scene lines up perfectly with a walking weekend. If you like greenery, the Lőverek (Lőver District) is a classic choice: peaceful guesthouses set amid trees near the swimming pool and the hiking area. From there, marked trails lead right into the hills, and you can reach the center with an easy stroll.
In and around the heart of town, several family-run guesthouses keep things simple and comfortable. Adorján Vendégház offers two levels and seven rooms in 1-, 2-, and 3-bed layouts, with space altogether for 32 guests. The downtown core is reachable on foot in about 10 minutes—ideal if you want to roll out of bed and meet your guide without a rush.
Alpokalja Vendégház sits in a quiet pocket of Sopron, about a 20-minute walk from the historic center. For visitors who favor apartment-style stays, Anita Apartman Sopron is right by Hungary’s western border at the foot of the Alps, roughly 37 miles from Vienna (Bécs). It’s a handy base if you’re mixing city walks with day trips over the border.
Lőverek Charm and Alpine Options
The Lőverek (Lőver District) has a cluster of pensions about a 15-minute walk from the city center. From there, the hiking area opens up, with signed paths that make it easy to explore the surroundings without a map. If winter pulls you toward the slopes, Lower Austrian ski resorts sit about 37 miles from Sopron and welcome visitors with broad terrain and services that make a spontaneous ski day perfectly doable.
In the Old Town’s Orbit
If you want to wake up as close to Sopron’s medieval lanes as possible, aim for stays in or next to the Old Town. Some apartments sit just 150 meters from the historic core, in spots that are quiet yet easy to reach by car. Belvárosi Vendégház Sopron offers options—from a family apartment with two rooms of three beds and a fully equipped separate-kitchen layout, to a three-bed guest room, and a two-person studio—each with its own bathroom. It’s an efficient setup if you’re traveling in a small group or want the flexibility of cooking your own meals.
Sleep by the City Walls
Bástya Panzió leans right into the city’s history. Built against Sopron’s more than 700-year-old outer fortifications near one of the small bastions, the two-story hotel stands near the gate once used by those heading toward Vienna (Bécs). You’ll find it at the junction of Vienna Street (Bécsi utca) and Patak Street (Patak utca) on the slope of Coronation Hill (Koronázó-domb). It’s central but calm, the kind of place where a morning coffee comes with a view of stones that have watched centuries roll by.
Plan Your 2026 Walkabout
Pick a Saturday, call the Tourinform Office, and plan a weekend around the free “On the Shoulders of Giants” walk. Combine it with a stay in the Lőverek (Lőver District) for forest air, or go for an Old Town base if you want restaurants, museums, and church towers at your doorstep. Whether you’re chasing stories of notable families, peeking into sanctuaries, or spotting wildlife on the city’s edge, Sopron’s 2026 program keeps it easy: guided, free, and running all year.
