when: 2026.02.15., Sunday

Budapest’s Museum of the National Assembly is rolling out free guided tours every Saturday for the exhibition “A magyar törvényhozás ezer éve” (A Thousand Years of Hungarian Legislation). The 45-minute tours start at 10:00 a.m. from the Parliament Visitor Centre at Kossuth Lajos Square (Kossuth Lajos tér) 1–3 in District V, Belváros–Lipótváros. The exhibition is continuously updated, giving returning visitors new angles to explore.

What the exhibition covers

Organized in eight chronological chapters, the exhibition traces the roots, formation, and evolution of Hungarian parliamentarism from the Middle Ages to the democratic transition. The opening section follows the story from the earliest assemblies up to the era of the estates-based Diets. The second unit runs up to 1918, charting the birth of the modern parliament—from reform-era assemblies and the rise of popular representation to the consolidation of a new parliamentary order. The third part explores the turbulent path between 1918 and 1990, marked by searches for direction and restarts.

Interactive highlights and how to join

Visitors can dive into interactive stations unpacking the essentials of the Golden Bull (Aranybulla) and the April Laws, and get a fuller view of the 1918–1990 period’s twists and renewals. Registration is required by 10:00 a.m. on the day before each tour via the provided email; up to 30 participants per tour may enter by showing a confirmation email. Upcoming Saturdays in Budapest include: 2026.02.15, 02.22, 03.01, 03.08, 03.15, 03.22, 03.29, 04.05, 04.12, 04.19. More dates will be added. Organizers reserve the right to change the schedule and program.

+
Located at the Parliament Visitor Centre on Kossuth Lajos Square—one of Budapest’s top, well-known sights for foreign visitors
+
Topic has broad international interest if you like European history and democracy; the “Thousand Years of Legislation” angle gives useful context for Hungary’s past and present
+
Easy access by public transport (M2 metro Kossuth Lajos tér, trams, buses) and straightforward by car/taxi to central District V
+
Regular weekly schedule on Saturdays makes it simple to plan into a Budapest weekend
+
Compares well to parliamentary history exhibits in London or Vienna, with a tighter, more digestible overview and hands-on elements
Cons
The subject—Hungarian legislative history—is niche; if you’re not into politics/history, it may feel academic
English-language availability isn’t explicitly stated; without Hungarian, parts may be less engaging unless the tour or displays have English support
Requires email registration by the morning before and caps groups at 30, so spontaneity is limited and popular dates may fill up
Schedule and program can change, which can complicate tight itineraries for short-stay visitors
