Budapest’s Parliament Museum (Országgyűlési Múzeum) is launching free guided tours every Saturday of the evolving exhibition titled A magyar törvényhozás ezer éve (A Thousand Years of Hungarian Legislation). The 45-minute tours start at 10:00 a.m. from the Parliament Visitor Centre at 1–3 Kossuth Lajos Square (Kossuth Lajos tér 1–3), 1055 Budapest, in the 5th District (Belváros-Lipótváros). Participation requires registration and a confirmation email; each tour is capped at 30 people. Sign up by 10:00 a.m. the day before the tour via the provided email address.

What the exhibition covers

Presented in eight chronological chapters, the show traces the roots, rise, and evolution of Hungarian parliamentarism from the Middle Ages to the regime change. The opening section follows the story from its early beginnings to the era of estate-based national assemblies. The second unit spans up to 1918, spotlighting the birth of the modern parliament: from reform-era assemblies and the creation of a representative legislature to the consolidation of a new, principles-based parliamentary system. The third section surveys 1918–1990, capturing shifts, false starts, and fresh starts in parliamentary life.

Interactive highlights and dates

Visitors can explore the essence of the Golden Bull (Aranybulla) and the April Laws through interactive content, and dig deeper into the turbulent 1918–1990 decades. Upcoming Saturdays in Budapest: 2026.02.15; 02.22; 03.01; 03.08; 03.15; 03.22; 03.29; 04.05; 04.12; 04.19. More dates coming soon. Organizers reserve the right to change times and programs.

Pros
+
Free Saturday tours mean zero entry cost, great for budget travelers and families
+
Short 45-minute format is kid-manageable and easy to slot into a sightseeing day
+
Central location at Kossuth Lajos Square is iconic and easy to combine with the Parliament building and Danube views
+
Parliament/’A Thousand Years of Hungarian Legislation’ is a big, internationally significant topic that adds context to European history
+
Interactive elements (Golden Bull, April Laws) help non-experts and teens engage without deep prior knowledge
+
Easy to reach by metro/tram or rideshare; driving is possible but not necessary in this central district
+
Capped groups (30 people) keep the tour focused and feel more premium than many free museum talks
Cons
Registration by email the day before can be a hassle for spontaneous travelers and may fill up fast
Content is history-heavy; younger kids or casual tourists might prefer more visual wow than legislative deep-dives
While Budapest is well-known, the Parliament Museum itself is less famous to foreign visitors than the main Parliament building tour
English guidance isn’t explicitly guaranteed; limited Hungarian skills could make it tougher if an English-language tour isn’t available
