Feb 16: Világszép nádszál kisasszony

On Monday, February 16, 2026, at 10:00, the Hungarian Folk Tale Theater (Magyar Népmese Színház) brings Világszép nádszál kisasszony (The Reed-Thin Beauty of the World) to the Kálmán Imre Cultural Center (Kálmán Imre Művelődési Központ) theater hall, as part of the Little Mole (Kisvakond) pass. In this one-act musical fairy tale, a prince vows at his brother’s wedding that he will marry the most beautiful woman in the wide world. There is only one: Világszép nádszál kisasszony. To free her from a witch’s captivity, he must traverse heaven and hell, guided by wondrous helpers, until the trials end in a wedding with the fabled beauty.

The prince’s quest, the witch’s snare, and the magical allies repeat for another morning audience. Cast, creative team, and venue remain the same in Siófok.

Mar 16: Szomorú királykisasszony

On Monday, March 16, 2026, at 10:00, the Iron Rooster Puppet Theater (Vaskakas Bábszínház) stages Szomorú királykisasszony (The Sad Princess), a puppet fairy tale at the Kálmán Imre Cultural Center theater hall, also part of the Little Mole pass. Running 50 minutes, the play unfolds as a folk-tale meetup in a gloomy princess’s living room. A public notice rings out: the king’s only daughter is perilously sad. No smile has crossed her face since time began. Urgent help needed! Send in joke masters, brave goatherds, scatterbrained heroes, or rascal charlatans. Whoever makes her laugh wins her hand and half the kingdom. Attempts flop—until a mysterious shepherd arrives with a golden-fleeced lamb.
Cast: Emőke Darvas, Bernát Sebestény, Edit Ragán, Tamás Szukenyik, István Vitányi-Juhász. Composer: Tamás Frank. Designers: Viola Lengyel, Anna Zorka Maróthy. Director: Anna Zorka Maróthy. Mentor: Andrea Pass. Location: Siófok.

Mar 17: Second Showing

The puppet tale repeats Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at 10:00, at the same theater hall with the same cast and creative team. Another chance to see the golden-fleeced lamb work its charm in Siófok.

Pros
+
Super family-friendly: puppets, fairy tales, concerts, playhouses, and a citywide egg-and-bunny run keep kids of all ages busy
+
Easygoing vibe in Siófok, a classic Lake Balaton resort town that’s built for families (parks, promenades, lakeside walks)
+
Lots of showtimes clustered in mornings, so you can plan a simple kid-first day trip or weekend
+
Topics (Cinderella, folk-tale heroes) are universal, so kids can enjoy the visuals and music even if they don’t catch every word
+
Hungarian not strictly required for fun—music, puppetry, costumes, and physical comedy carry the story
+
Getting there is straightforward: frequent trains from Budapest to Siófok (about 1.5–2 hours), walk or short taxi to the Kálmán Imre Cultural Center; by car it’s an easy M7 drive with ample parking in town
+
Compared with kids’ theater elsewhere in Europe/US, prices are typically lower and venues are intimate, so kids sit close to the action
Cons
International name recognition is modest: Hungarian folk tales and local troupes aren’t widely known to U.S. visitors
English-language support is limited; no guarantee of supertitles or translations, which could frustrate older kids who want the full plot
Siófok is well-known to regional travelers but less famous internationally outside summer beach season, so the town can feel quiet in Feb–Mar
Morning weekday showtimes might clash with travel schedules, and popular dates can sell out via local pass systems (Kisvakond)
