Budapest’s spring is getting a heady dose of color and scent: the Orchid and Bromeliad Exhibition returns to Vajdahunyad Castle in City Park from Thursday, March 19 to Sunday, March 22, 2026. Hosted by the Hungarian Orchid Society, the crowd-favorite showcase puts rare orchids and their exotic companions in the spotlight, with Brazil as this year’s guest country. Doors are open daily from 10:00 to 18:00, and the organizers reserve the right to change the schedule or program.
Where to Find It
The venue sits in the 14th District (Zugló), 1146 Budapest, in the atmospheric halls of Vajdahunyad Castle. The exhibition spans two levels: displays on the first floor and a bustling marketplace on the ground floor.
What’s on Show
Expect a sweeping lineup: orchids, bromeliads, tillandsias, tropicals, bougainvilleas, exotic and Mediterranean plants, plus succulents, rock garden species, and flower bulbs. Local collectors, exhibitors, and traders will be on site, so you can admire, ask questions, and buy your favorites to take home.
Opening and Daily Flow
True to tradition, the president of the Hungarian Orchid Society and a guest of honor will cut the ribbon on opening day at Vajdahunyad Castle. The ground-floor marketplace keeps the plant treasures within easy reach, while the first-floor exhibition offers meticulously staged displays for unhurried wandering and photo ops.
Pro Tips and Demos
Friday and Saturday sharpen the focus on know-how. Expect repotting advice, practical tips, clever ideas, and talks spanning different orchid themes. A standout floral design show brings creative arrangements to life—perfect for beginners seeking confidence and seasoned growers looking for a new trick.
Sunday Still Blooms
The final day keeps the momentum going: the upstairs exhibition remains open, and the downstairs trading area continues to serve plant hunters and late deciders.
Brazil Takes the Stage
Each edition spotlights a different country’s orchid world; this spring belongs to Brazil. Home to 202 native orchid genera—23 of them endemic—Brazil ranks second globally with 1,540 endemic species. Its richest phytogeographic region is the Atlantic Forest with 1,398 species, followed by the Amazon with 784 and the Cerrado with 656. More than 2,500 orchid species grow in Brazil, and many more await discovery in little-explored wilds. Familiar names with Brazilian roots include Cattleya (along with former Sophronitis and Laelia now folded into Cattleya), Epidendrum, Maxillaria, Miltonia, Oncidium, Phragmipedium, and Stanhopea. Fittingly, the national flower is the orchid Cattleya purpurata (formerly Laelia purpurata).
