What’s on view

Georg Baselitz (born 1938, Deutschbaselitz) is famed for monumental paintings and sculptures and for singular, often provocative prints. Less known: for over six decades he has collected only Mannerist prints, assembling one of the world’s most significant Mannerist print collections. The show presents mid-16th-century artists through Baselitz’s personal lens, revealing the era’s break from Renaissance harmony toward irregularity, daring forms, and bizarre imagery—an aesthetic that closely aligns with Baselitz’s own creative convictions.

Who guides you

February 25, 4:15 p.m. – Réka Filep, art historian, staff of the Prints Collection. March 7, 3:00 p.m. – Borbála Mink, art historian, Prints Collection. March 13, 4:15 p.m. – Eszter Kardos, art historian, Prints Collection and exhibition curator. Graphics Under the Magnifying Glass (February 28, 3:00–4:00 p.m.) delves into highlights from Mannerist Eyes – Prints from Georg Baselitz’s Collection, exploring whether a 20th–21st-century icon collects works mirroring his own bold provocations or gravitates toward classical balance. Expect revelations among exceptional, often lesser-known works.

Pros
+
Super affordable for U.S. travelers—about $4.20 plus museum entry—so it’s easy to add to a Budapest itinerary
+
Family-friendliness is decent: one-hour tours, clean headset system, and the “magnifying glass” session sounds hands-on for curious teens
+
The Museum of Fine Arts is a major, well-known institution in Budapest, so the location is familiar to many foreign visitors
+
Easy to reach: it’s on Dózsa György út near City Park/Hősök tere, with simple Metro/bus/tram access and straightforward car/taxi drop-off
+
Tours are guided by in-house art historians/curators, which is a serious upgrade over typical big-city audio guides
+
Baselitz is internationally famous, so the hook—his Mannerist print collection—has real name recognition in the art world
+
Compared with similar print-focused shows in Europe/US, this is unusually focused and personal, offering a rare lens on Mannerism at a bargain price
Cons
English-language availability isn’t specified, so Hungarian-only guidance is a risk for U.S. visitors
Mannerist prints can be niche; younger kids may find the content abstract compared with interactive science/memory museums
The special “Graphics Under the Magnifying Glass” session caps at 18 people and dates are limited, so tickets may be hard to snag
If you’re self-driving, Budapest parking near City Park can be tight or paid, adding minor hassle compared with metro access
