A fresh stage take on the 1934 classic film Meseautó arrives in Szekszárd on 2026.03.02, bringing Veres 1 Színház’s sparkling musical to town. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the company presents a modern folk tale, a magical ride “in the story’s most beautiful car,” aiming to charm new audiences and bridge generations with a stellar cast.

The story hits the gas

Bank CEO and notorious charmer János Szűcs is desperate for a break—one month off, far from the world and even farther from women. Just before he disappears, he buys a dream machine: a Horch 780 convertible for 20,000 pengő. Then an elegant young woman browsing the showroom catches his eye, and the plan swerves in an instant.

Pros
+
Family-friendly vibes with a classic rom-com plot, catchy songs, and no heavy themes, so it works for kids, teens, and grandparents alike
+
The 1934 Meseautó story is a beloved Hungarian classic, and this upbeat musical revamp makes it easy for newcomers to enjoy even without prior knowledge
+
Veres 1 Színház is a well-regarded touring company celebrating 10 years, so production quality, costumes, and music should be solid
+
Szekszárd is a charming small city in wine country—easy add-on to a Budapest or Pécs trip and a fun cultural detour
+
Central venue on Szent István Square makes it straightforward to find, and rideshare/taxis are simple; parking is typically manageable in small cities
+
Public transport access is doable: trains or buses from Budapest to Szekszárd, then a short local taxi/walk to the square
+
Compared to similar retro-musical revivals abroad, ticket prices are usually friendlier, with a more intimate, local-theater feel
Cons
The Meseautó film isn’t widely known internationally, so some cultural references may fly over a U.S. visitor’s head
Hungarian-language performance likely—non-speakers may miss jokes and wordplay unless surtitles are provided (rare in regional shows)
Szekszárd is not a top-tier tourist hotspot, so English signage and services can be patchy, and you may need basic Hungarian phrases or a translation app
Reaching it is a bit of a time commitment from Budapest (2–3 hours each way), and late-night return options by public transport are limited
