From late winter to midsummer, Debrecen packs its calendar with festivals, concerts, comedy, candlelit classics, markets, and big-stage spectacles. As Hungary’s second city, it pairs a rich cultural heritage—museums, parks, and the Great Reformed Church—with a nonstop run of live events. Here’s the lineup from late February through July, with dates, venues, and ticket ranges converted to USD where listed.
February 24 to March 1 brings the 16th DESZKA Festival, the city’s contemporary theater showcase spread across Debrecen’s cultural hubs. On March 3, the Hungarian National Philharmonic joins the Kodály Philharmonic Debrecen at the Kölcsey Center’s Grand Hall. On March 6, “With the Kodály Choir” opens the University of Debrecen’s Aula to choral fans (about $7.40). On March 7, Lovarda hosts Apostol’s “We Can’t Live Without You!”—Hungarian pop nostalgia done big.
March 8 starts with the Debrecen Antique Fair, strictly old-school: antiques, retro pieces, artworks, tools, and one-of-a-kind gift ideas. That night, comedian László Hadházi headlines “Dogs,” hosted by László Lovász, at Dumaszínház in Főnix Arena (about $22.50–$43.40). March 9 delivers the comedy A feleség negyvennél kezdődik (A Wife Begins at Forty) at the VOKE Egyetértés Cultural Center ($24.40–$27.10). The University of Debrecen’s Liszt Hall hosts chamber “Portraits”: Arensky on March 12 and Rachmaninoff on March 13 (each about $6.80). Also on March 13, “VABADABA – Péter Geszti Concert Night with Eszter Váczi” hits the Kölcsey Grand Hall with slick wordplay and jazz-pop ($35.10–$40.50).
