Veszprém’s archdiocesan calendar for spring 2026 stacks up guided castle walks, marriage prep workshops, Lenten music, a first-ever staging of the medieval Adam play, and a family-friendly series that helps kids practice empathy and teamwork through Bible role-play. Most events are free or community-based, and several unfold across the city’s most atmospheric sites, from the Séd Valley to the Margaret Ruins (Margit-romok) and up to Benedek Hill. Pencil in these dates and expect crowds around Palm Sunday.
Marriage Course: Building Strong Foundations
On March 6 and March 13, the Padányi School in Veszprém (Szeghlety J. utca 6) hosts a marriage preparation course aimed at couples getting ready for life together. The curriculum is practical and frank: the spirituality of marriage; family of origin; communication and conflict resolution; intimacy in marriage; differences between men and women and common pitfalls; and parenting and family life. It’s a compact way to surface big conversations before the wedding rush. Sessions run in Hungarian and are designed to be interactive.
Guided Castle Walks: Step Into History
The city’s beloved Várséta guided castle walks return the second weekend of March. On March 7 and 8, walks depart at 11:30, 14:00, and 16:00. On March 14, there are two departures, at 14:00 and 16:00. Expect a brisk loop through the historic heart of Veszprém with stories stitched to stones, panoramic lookout points, and a sense of how faith and fortress have long intertwined here. Dress for the weather and bring questions—the guides are known for lively answers.
Lenten Musical Devotion in the Cathedral
On Saturday, March 14 at 19:00, St. Michael’s Cathedral (Szent Mihály-székesegyház) hosts a Lenten musical devotion that blends choral beauty with quiet reflection. The Cantabile Vocal Ensemble (Cantabile Énekegyüttes) of Veszprém, conducted by Mária Petrőcz Veres Györgyné, performs alongside the CapPuccini Choir of Kaposvár, led by Zoltán Szili. Their joint service is meant to help listeners settle, deepen, and draw closer—through music—to the mystery of Christ’s Passion and redeeming love. Admission is free. Everyone’s welcome.
Bible Role-play for Kids
The Bible Role-play series invites children aged 7–10 to develop social skills and emotional intelligence through story and teamwork. Sessions take place in Veszprém at the Archdiocesan Office’s Gizella Hall (8200 Veszprém, Jutasi út 18/2) on Sundays: March 15, March 29, April 12, and April 26. Kids get active parts, learn to listen, negotiate, and express feelings, and leave with a shared sense of adventure. Parents appreciate the structure; children love the stage time.
Palm Sunday: Live Passion Through the City
Palm Sunday, March 29 at 15:00, marks the Live Passion, a moving mystery play that walks through Veszprém’s iconic locations. The route traces the Séd Valley, passes the Margaret Ruins (Margit-romok), and climbs to Benedek Hill, turning the landscape into a living stage for the Passion, Crucifixion, and Resurrection. It’s a communal, open-air act of storytelling and faith that draws large crowds—bring comfortable shoes and arrive early. This year, there’s a compelling prelude the evening before.
Debut: The Adam Play at the Margaret Ruins
On Saturday, March 28 at 19:00, the Margaret Ruins (Margit-romok) host the first local staging of the Adam play (Ádám-játék), an Old French mystery play counted among Europe’s earliest known dramas, contemporary with Hungary’s own Funeral Oration. It dramatizes the Fall: the tempter overcomes the first human pair, who receive punishment but also a promise—the foretelling of the Savior’s coming that still frames human hope. The setting among stone walls at dusk should be unforgettable. Visitors are warmly invited to both the Adam play and the Palm Sunday Live Passion.
More in April and May
Classical and organ fans, save the dates: on April 15, Martin Baker performs with Tamás Kéméndi in a special joint concert; on May 28, János Pálúr presents Creation Story (Teremtéstörténet). Details and venues will be announced; organizers reserve the right to change programs and times.
Organizers note that all schedules are subject to change. Check local listings closer to each date for final timings and access information.
