On a brisk Lent-into-Easter stretch, Veszprém’s archdiocesan calendar packs in art, music, guided walks, family workshops, and moving liturgies. The season opens with a contemplative exhibition and builds toward Palm Sunday’s live Passion across the city’s historic sites—then continues with concerts and children’s programs into late spring.
Exhibition: On the Road to Self and to God
Opening March 12 at 1:00 p.m., the Aula of the Veszprém Archdiocesan College unveils works by Sister Tünde M. Erzsébet Takács (SAF). On view through April 30, her eighteen modern pieces map a quiet inner passage where colors, forms, and gestures slowly turn into prayer. Each work pairs with a brief psalm quote and questions for reflection, inviting not just looking but a pause that nudges visitors onto a path toward themselves and toward God.
Marriage Prep Course in Veszprém
On March 13, Padányi School (Szeghlety J. utca 6) hosts an engaged couples’ course designed to prepare pairs for marriage and family life. Topics range from the spirituality of marriage and family of origin to communication and conflict resolution, intimacy in marriage, male–female differences and common pitfalls, and the daily craft of parenting and family rhythms.
Lenten Musical Devotion in the Cathedral
On Saturday, March 14 at 7:00 p.m., St. Michael’s Cathedral (Szent Mihály-székesegyház) hosts a free Lenten musical devotion. The Cantabile Choir of Veszprém (Cantabile Énekegyüttes), conducted by Mária Petrőcz Veres Györgyné, joins the CapPuccini Choir from Kaposvár under Zoltán Szili. Their combined service aims to settle hearts into silence and contemplation, using the language of music to draw closer to the mystery of Christ’s passion and redeeming love. All are warmly welcome.
Guided Castle Walks
Also on March 14, guided Castle Walks depart at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., opening the city’s elevated old quarter and vistas with stories stitched to its stones.
Biblical Role-Play for Kids
The recurring Biblical Role-Play series invites children aged 7–10 to practice social skills and grow emotional intelligence. Sessions run Sundays in the Gizella Hall of the Archdiocesan Office (8200 Veszprém, Jutasi út 18/2) on February 15, March 1, March 15, March 29, April 12, and April 26. Expect thoughtful play anchored in Scripture, peer interaction, and gentle guidance.
Blessed Mária Magdolna Bódi Commemoration
March 23 marks the memorial of Blessed Mária Magdolna Bódi’s martyrdom and closes the Bódi Mária Magdolna 80 commemorative year. The St. Michael’s Choir (Szent Mihály Kórus) serves the 6:00 p.m. Mass at St. Michael’s Cathedral (Szent Mihály-székesegyház) in remembrance of the young laywoman whose fearless witness resonates across generations.
Mindszenty Memorial Day with Children’s Choir
On March 25, the city observes the anniversary of József Mindszenty’s consecration as Bishop of Veszprém. The St. Michael’s Children’s Choir (Szent Mihály Gyermekkórus) will sing at the 6:00 p.m. Mass in the Church of the Risen Savior, honoring the prelate whose steadfastness under tyranny remains a landmark of Hungarian faith.
Adam Play and Palm Sunday Live Passion
Veszprém’s Palm Sunday centerpiece returns on March 29 at 3:00 p.m.: the Live Passion, a moving mystery play that winds through the Séd Valley, past the Margaret Ruins (Margit-romok), and up to Benedict Hill (Benedek-hegy). The journey invites participants to let Christ’s suffering, death, and resurrection pass through them and touch the soul. New this year, on Saturday, March 28 at 7:00 p.m., the Margaret Ruins (Margit-romok) host the Adam Play—a rare chance to see an Old French mystery drama, among Europe’s earliest known stage works and contemporaneous with Hungary’s Funeral Sermon. It dramatizes the Fall: the tempter overcomes the first couple; along with punishment comes the promise of a Redeemer, a thread that shapes human life to this day.
Cathedral Choir on Palm Sunday Morning
On March 29 at 10:30 a.m., Padányi Schola sings the Passion during the archbishop’s Mass at St. Michael’s Cathedral (Szent Mihály-székesegyház), blending chant and solemn narrative at the heart of the liturgy.
More Kids’ Role-Play Dates
The children’s Biblical Role-Play continues on March 29 and April 12 in Gizella Hall, with the same Sunday rhythm and focus on empathy, collaboration, and faith-infused play.
Spring Concert Highlights
Mid-April brings a standout organ-and-ensemble evening: on April 15, Martin Baker shares the stage with Tamás Kéméndi for a joint concert, setting a high bar for the city’s sacred music season. Then, on May 28, János Pálúr presents Creation Story (Teremtéstörténet), promising a program that paints Genesis in sound—structure out of chaos, light from darkness, and the breath of life transposed to keys and pipes.
