From January 7 to 12, 2026, the world’s eyes turn to Budapest for the 16th Budapest International Circus Festival at the Budapest Circus (Fővárosi Nagycirkusz) in Zugló’s Állatkerti körút 12/A. This powerhouse event, held every two years, ranks as the world’s second-biggest circus gathering after Monte Carlo, drawing top acts from 21 countries across four continents—more than 200 world-famous performers dazzling audiences in five show blocks on Central Europe’s only stone circus ring. Spain, Colombia, Japan, Russia, Italy, Ukraine, Germany, China, Ethiopia, Switzerland, Mexico, Canada, France, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, Hungary, Romania, the UK, Argentina, the US, and Brazil all send their top productions in every genre imaginable. For one week, Budapest becomes the circus capital of the world.
The Locomotive Symbol Steams Ahead
The festival’s 2026 emblem is a locomotive, symbolizing Budapest’s role as “the locomotive of world circus art, society’s cultural engine, the last art form AI can’t replace,” per Fekete Péter, director of the Budapest Circus (Fővárosi Nagycirkusz). On December 12, 2025, at 11 a.m., cranes hoisted a working 136-year-old steam locomotive—serial number 2459—onto the plaza in front of the circus. Thanks to the National Circus Arts Center’s partnership with the Hungarian Technical and Transport Museum, circus fans can check out this historic beast for over three months.
