This key work of Hungarian literature goes beyond mere pamphleteering to explore the pitfalls of power and the depths of the soul—hidden loves, marriage games, family blackmail on the path to self-assertion and ruin. Young KopjĂĄss IstvĂĄn becomes ZsarĂĄtnok prosecutor against corrupt rivals. He is idealistic, with empty pockets but his head full of world-saving plans. But power brings old and new “relatives.” Twisty plot and character depth make it rich fun.

Pros
+
Super family-friendly with kids' choirs, kindergarten dancers, outdoor adventure games, and boat tours that keep everyone from toddlers to teens happy.
+
Lake Balaton's gorgeous setting feels like a chill U.S. lakeside getaway but with Hungarian flair and way fewer crowds.
+
No Hungarian skills needed for hikes, boat rides, the Japanese choir concert, English speakers club, or the adventure games.
+
Easy to reach by train or bus from Budapest in about 2-3 hours, or drive if you rent a car—public transport's reliable and scenic.
+
Affordable fun with tickets $18-32, plus free shows like Pierrot and the choir, beating pricey U.S. festival prices.
+
Stacks up great against similar small-town events like U.S. community theater fests or European lake festivals, but adds unique operettas and international choirs.
+
Huge variety from arts galas and plays to sports, food events, and nature adventures—something new every day.
Cons
–
Plays and operettas like Countess Maritza or Relatives are in Hungarian, so you'd need subtitles or prior knowledge to fully get the story.
–
Keszthely and these events aren't big names internationally like Coachella or Edinburgh Fringe, so it might feel under-the-radar for Americans.
–
Lake Balaton's known to some Euro travelers, but not as iconic to U.S. tourists as places like Venice or the Loire Valley.
–
A few hot shows like The Theater Maker are already sold out, so plan ahead or risk missing out.
