Relatives (Rokonok) – Two-Act Play (March 31)

Hevesi SĂĄndor VĂĄrszĂnhĂĄz brings this powerhouse of Hungarian literature to the stage on March 31 at 7 p.m. It’s the fourth show in the 2025/2026 Festetics season subscription: tickets for the four-show package are $61 or $72; single seats $18 or $21. This defining social critique goes beyond pamphleteering jabs, delving into the intricacies of power struggles and the human soul’s dark paths. Hidden loves, messy marriages, family blackmail, emotional traps, and financial schemes pave the road from self-assertion to self-destruction. Young KopjĂĄss IstvĂĄn, a clean-cut guy with empty pockets but big world-saving ideas, gets elected chief prosecutor in ZsarĂĄtnok against a corrupt rival. But the job brings power for good—and a flood of old and new “relatives.” Packed with layers, sensitivity, thrills, twists, and sharp character portraits, it’s a rich night of entertainment.

Pierrot and Prigozsin in Life’s Whirl (Pierrot Ă©s Prigozsin az Ă©let forgatagĂĄban) (April 1)

Free nationwide “human hunt” tour hits Keszthely on April 1 at 7 p.m., running 110 minutes, for ages 14+. KettƑspont SzĂnhĂĄz wraps their campaign with three shows, backed by KĂ©tfarkĂș KutyapĂĄrt’s 3. RĂłzsa SĂĄndor NĂ©pi KampĂĄnypĂ©nz TĂ©kozlĂł Alap and welcoming venues. It’s where cultural vibes meet community energy. Philosophers and clowns Pierrot (Ács TamĂĄs) and Prigozsin (Formanek Csaba) push artistic limits to touch souls, but lack their third member to provide meaning. Inspired by François Truffaut’s Jules and Jim, incorporating Ács’s ideas; written and directed by Formanek. A weird love triangle unfolds alongside a friendship spanning places and times, with two twisty life stories that are hilarious and gut-wrenching.

Little Singers Japanese Children’s Choir Concert (April 2)

Catch this special free treat at Balaton SzĂnhĂĄz’s main hall on April 2 at 5 p.m. The choir from Hyogo, Japan, formed in 1990, blends Japanese and European choral worlds with diverse songs. They’ve toured Korea and the USA since the 1990s, Europe from 1996, hosted global choirs, and built 30-year ties with Keszthely’s Életfa ÁltalĂĄnos Ă©s AlapfokĂș MƱvĂ©szeti Iskola through music exchanges. Pros
+
Super family-friendly lineup with the outdoor adventure game perfect for kids to explore sights, mini playhouse for babies, boat tours, and nature hikes everyone can join
+
Loads of free events like the Japanese kids' choir concert, English Speakers Club, city history walk, and world traveler talk, keeping costs low for a US wallet
+
Variety packs a punch – theater, choirs, magic with Danny Blue, sports adventures, and lake cruises all in one small town, way more diverse than typical US spring fests
+
Keszthely's compact lakeside vibe makes hopping between venues a breeze on foot, local buses, or by car with easy parking near Lake Balaton
+
Most events don't need Hungarian skills – visual adventures, English-friendly club, international choir, and guided tours work great for English speakers
+
Lake Balaton's spring scene feels like a chill European secret compared to crowded US lake events like those on Tahoe, with authentic Hungarian flair minus the hype
+
Offbeat international draw with Japanese choir exchanges and global travelers sharing stories, adding a worldly twist not common in smaller US town events
Cons
–
Keszthely's not super famous to US tourists like Budapest, so it might feel like discovering a hidden spot that requires extra planning
–
Hungarian-only plays like Relatives and Pierrot demand language skills or subtitles to fully get the drama, skipping the deep theater vibes
–
Reaching it means flying into Budapest then a 2-hour train or drive, doable but not as quick as hopping a domestic flight stateside
