March 31: Rokonok (Relatives) – Power Plays and Family Drama

Catch the Hevesi SĂĄndor Castle Theater (Hevesi SĂĄndor VĂĄrszĂnhĂĄz) staging of Rokonok (Relatives), a two-act play, on March 31 at 7 p.m. Season tickets cost $60 or $71 for four shows; single tickets $18 or $21. It’s the fourth show in the 2025/2026 Festetics season. This cornerstone of Hungarian literature skewers society without turning into a mere pamphlet. It dives deep into power’s pitfalls, hidden loves, twisted marriages, family blackmail, self-assertion gone wrong, and self-destruction. Young KopjĂĄss IstvĂĄn gets elected chief prosecutor in ZsarĂĄtnok over a corrupt rival. He’s pure-hearted with empty pockets but a head full of world-saving ideas. But the job brings power—and a swarm of old and new “relatives.” The plot is layered and sensitive, thrilling with twists, and the character work makes for rich entertainment.

Pros
+
This Spring Bash is super family-friendly with free kids' playhouses, all-ages Japanese choir concerts, and outdoor adventure games that keep everyone entertained
+
Lake Balaton's Keszthely is a hidden gem for U.S. tourists – way less crowded than Venice or the Loire Valley, but with that same lakeside charm
+
No Hungarian needed for tons of events like the English Speakers' Club, free clown shows, boat cruises, guided tours, and the mentalist act
+
Crazy easy to reach – train from Budapest airport takes just 2-3 hours, or rent a car for a scenic drive along the lake
+
Compared to U.S. festivals like SXSW or Coachella, this is dirt cheap with $18 theater tickets and heaps of freebies
+
International flair from the Japanese choir and world traveler talks makes it feel worldly without the jet-lag hassle
+
Variety beats similar Euro spring fests – plays, music, hikes, and mentalism all in one walkable town, not spread out like in Salzburg - Keszthely and these events aren't big names internationally for Americans – Balaton's cool but flies under the radar vs. Amalfi or Tahoe spots
Cons
–
Core theater plays like Rokonok are in Hungarian, so you'll catch vibes but miss plot twists without a translation app or skills
–
Some hot shows like The Theater Maker are already sold out, so book early or risk missing the stars
–
Public transport rocks locally, but getting from U.S. hubs means a layover in Budapest first, not as seamless as domestic drives
