Guided Castle Walks – Stories from the City’s Heart
Weekends feature the most popular program at three slots: 11:30, 14:00, and 16:00. These tours unlock spots you can’t visit alone: the Archbishop’s Palace with its Baroque interiors, restored spaces, and special artifacts; Gizella Chapel, the castle district’s oldest and quietest sacred spot where surviving fresco fragments create a medieval mood; St. Michael Cathedral and its crypt, the city’s defining building whose basilica history and medieval crypt details paint a true picture of Veszprém’s story; and St. George Chapel, an ancient memorial in the castle’s core, accessible only on guided walks.
Exhibitions at Bíró–Giczey House
All exhibits are free during opening hours. “Bogáncs és liliom – Magdolnák virágai” (Thistle and Lily – Magdalene’s Flowers), the 2025 Exhibit of the Year winner, showcases Mary Magdalene through artifacts, engravings, and modern reflections tied to Blessed Bódi Mary Magdalene’s thoughts. The “Kamrakiállítás” (Chamber Exhibit) details the cathedral’s past with Baroque items, liturgical pieces, and photos over 100 years old. “Nem káptalan a fejem” (Not a Chapter on My Head) is an interactive display explaining who canons were and how Veszprém’s chapter operated in a fun, accessible way. The archaeological exhibit uses eye-catching installations to show the castle hill’s changing settlement history and excavations over centuries.

New Sites Boost Veszprém’s Guided Castle Walks
Veszprém’s castle district adds fresh chapters with two new gems on these popular tours. Now head underground to St. Michael Cathedral’s crypt and uncover St. George Chapel’s excavated remains, where a millennium of history comes alive. The cathedral tour plunges into 1,000 years: spot the 14th-century Gothic sanctuary, Bishop Márton Padányi Bíró’s Baroque tomb, and the restored interior. The crypt’s vibe—silence under vaults, time locked in stone—is a tour highlight. St. George Chapel, north of the cathedral, is one of Hungary’s oldest Christian sites. Excavations revealed the original 10th-century rotunda walls. Legend says Prince St. Emeric vowed here before the Virgin’s altar, giving it sacred weight. In the Middle Ages, it was a top pilgrimage spot holding St. George’s head relic, a gift from the Byzantine emperor to King St. Stephen.
Tours run year-round, 60 minutes, limited groups. Specific 2026 dates: April 3 (Fri), 4 (Sat), 5 (Sun), 6 (Mon), 7 (Tue), 8 (Wed), 9 (Thu), 10 (Fri), 11 (Sat), 12 (Sun), 18 (Sat), 19 (Sun)—all at 10:30, 14:00, and 16:00 in Veszprém.
