Veszprém’s castle quarter swings open its doors in 2026 with guided walks that dive deep into a thousand years of history. Wander these spaces and you’ll not only learn about the buildings’ past but feel the spiritual thread that’s shaped Veszprém—the queens’ city—for a millennium. Thematic tours reveal the area’s unique vibe and ancient stories, starting from the Biró–Giczey House at Vár utca 31, 8200 Veszprém. Weekends kick off at popular time slots like 11:30, 14:00, and 16:00, unlocking spots you can’t visit alone: the Archbishop’s Palace with its Baroque interiors, revamped spaces, and special artifacts; the serene Gizella Chapel, the quarter’s oldest sacred site with surviving medieval fresco fragments; St. Michael’s Cathedral and its crypt, which sketch Veszprém’s history through the basilica’s legacy and medieval details; and the heart of the castle, St. George’s Chapel, accessible only on these tours. Check the event calendar for exact times and changes.
Free Exhibitions at Biró–Giczey House
Pop into the Biró–Giczey House for free exhibitions during opening hours. “Bogáncs és liliom – Magdolnák virágai” (Thistle and Lily – Magdalene’s Flowers), the 2025 Exhibition of the Year winner, showcases artifacts, engravings, and modern takes on Mary Magdalene, paired with Blessed Bódi Mary Magdalene’s thoughts. The “Kamrakiállítás” (Chamber Exhibition) displays Baroque items, liturgical pieces, and over 100-year-old photos from the cathedral’s past. “Nem káptalan a fejem” (Not a Canon on My Head) is an interactive display explaining who the canons were and how Veszprém’s chapter operated, in a fun, straightforward way. The archaeological exhibit uses eye-catching installations to trace the castle hill’s shifting settlement history and unearthed finds.

New Sites Expand the Tours
Veszprém’s castle tours are enhanced with two new sites: descend into St. Michael’s Cathedral crypt and explore St. George’s Chapel ruins, making a millennium of history visible. The cathedral tour plunges into 1,000 years: 14th-century Gothic sanctuary, Bishop Padányi Bíró Márton’s Baroque tomb, restored interiors. The crypt’s vaulted silence captures time in stone—a tour highlight. St. George’s Chapel, on the cathedral’s north side, is among Hungary’s oldest Christian sites. Excavations uncovered its 10th-century rotunda foundations. Legend says Prince St. Emeric vowed here before the Virgin’s altar; it was a key medieval pilgrimage spot housing St. George’s head relic, gifted by the Byzantine emperor to King St. Stephen. Tours run year-round, 60 minutes, limited groups.
