Guided Castle Walks – Stories from the City’s Heart
Weekends bring the hottest draws, starting at 11:30, 14:00, and 16:00. These walks unlock spots you can’t visit on your own: the Archbishop’s Palace with its Baroque interiors, revamped spaces, and standout artifacts; St. Gisela Chapel (Gizella Chapel), the castle quarter’s oldest and quietest sacred spot, alive with surviving medieval fresco fragments; St. Michael’s Cathedral and its crypt, the city’s defining building where the cathedral’s history and the crypt’s medieval details paint a true picture of Veszprém’s story; and St. George’s Chapel, an ancient memorial in the castle’s core, accessible only on these tours.
Free Exhibitions at Biró–Giczey House
Drop in anytime during opening hours to these no-cost shows. Bogáncs és liliom – Magdolnák virágai (Thistle and Lily – Magdalene’s Flowers), the 2025 Exhibition of the Year winner, spotlights Mary Magdalene through artifacts, engravings, and modern reflections, paired with thoughts from Blessed Mary Magdalene Bódi. “Kamrakiállítás” – részletek a Főszékesegyház múltjából (“Chamber Exhibition” – Details from the Cathedral’s Past) features Baroque items, liturgical pieces, and over 100-year-old photos. “Nem káptalan a fejem” – interaktív tárlat (“Not a Chapter on My Head” – interactive exhibition) playfully explains who the canons were and how Veszprém’s chapter operated. The archaeological exhibition brings the castle hill’s shifting settlement history to life with dramatic installations and finds.

Venture underground to St. Michael’s Cathedral crypt and uncover the remains of St. George’s Chapel, where a millennium of history comes to light. The cathedral tour plunges into 1,000 years: 14th-century Gothic sanctuary, Bishop Márton Padányi Bíró’s Baroque tomb, restored interiors. The crypt’s vaulted hush traps time in stone—a tour highlight. St. George’s Chapel, on the cathedral’s north side, is among Hungary’s oldest Christian sites. Excavations revealed its 10th-century rotunda walls. Legend says Prince St. Emeric (St. Imre) vowed here before the Virgin’s altar, giving it sacred weight. Medieval pilgrims flocked here; it housed St. George’s head relic, a Byzantine gift to King St. Stephen. Tours run year-round, 60 minutes, limited groups. The castle quarter fully unveils its riches, letting you experience its thousand-year soul.
