Veszprém’s castle district unveils its treasures in 2026 with guided walks that let you experience over a thousand years of history that has shaped this city of queens. You’ll not only learn about the buildings’ past but also feel the spiritual continuity that has defined Veszprém for centuries. Thematic guided castle walks reveal the unique atmosphere and millennium-old stories of the castle quarter, starting from the Biró–Giczey House at Vár utca 31, 8200 Veszprém.
Guided Castle Walks – Stories from the City’s Heart
Weekends bring the most popular program with tours kicking off at 11:30, 14:00, and 16:00. These walks unlock spots you can’t visit on your own: the Archbishop’s Palace with its Baroque interiors, revamped spaces, and special artifacts; Gizella Chapel, the castle quarter’s oldest and quietest sacred space with surviving fresco fragments that create a medieval vibe; St. Michael’s Cathedral and its crypt, the city’s defining building where the basilica’s history and medieval crypt details paint a true picture of Veszprém’s past; and St. George’s Chapel, an ancient memorial site in the castle’s heart, accessible only on guided tours. Check the event calendar for exact times and changes. Tours start in front of the Biró–Giczey House.
Exhibitions at Biró–Giczey House
All exhibits are free during opening hours. Thistle and Lily – Magdalene’s Flowers (Bogáncs és liliom – Magdolnák virágai), the 2025 Exhibition of the Year winner, showcases artifacts, engravings, and contemporary reflections on Mary Magdalene, featuring thoughts from Blessed Mária Magdolna Bódi. The “Chamber Exhibition” (“Kamrakiállítás”) displays Baroque-era items, liturgical elements, and over 100-year-old photos from the cathedral’s past. “Not a Chapter on My Head” (“Nem káptalan a fejem”), an interactive exhibit, playfully explains who the canons were and how Veszprém’s chapter operated. The archaeological exhibition highlights the castle hill’s evolving settlement history and finds through stunning installations.

New Sites Expand Veszprém’s Guided Castle Walks
The castle district’s story gets a fresh chapter: popular tours now add two exclusive spots. Venture underground to the crypt of St. Michael’s Cathedral and uncover the remains of St. George’s Chapel, where a millennium of history becomes visible. The cathedral tour dives into layers of a thousand years: 14th-century Gothic sanctuary, Bishop Márton Padányi Bíró’s Baroque tomb, restored interiors. The crypt’s atmosphere—silence under vaults, time locked in stone—will be a tour highlight. St. George’s Chapel, on the cathedral’s north side, is one of Hungary’s oldest Christian sites. Excavations revealed the original 10th-century rotunda walls. Legend says Prince St. Emeric (Imre herceg) made a vow here before the Virgin Mary’s altar, giving it sacred weight. In the Middle Ages, it was a key pilgrimage spot housing St. George’s head relic, gifted by the Byzantine emperor to King St. Stephen. Tours run year-round, last 60 minutes, limited groups. Walk these spaces to grasp the buildings’ past and the spiritual legacy shaping Veszprém.
