Veszprém’s renewed Castle District is rolling out a full 2026 calendar with guided walks, free exhibitions, music, and citywide festivals. The heart of the hilltop district opens spaces usually off-limits, and the lineup stretches from April pop-ups to peak summer concerts and sports.

Guided Castle Walks

Themed tours dive into the thousand-year story and singular mood of the Castle District, running on weekends at 11:30, 14:00, and 16:00. The route unlocks sites not open on their own:

– Archbishop’s Palace: Baroque interiors, renewed rooms, standout artworks.

– Gizella Chapel: one of the oldest, quietest sacred spaces, where surviving fresco fragments conjure a distinct medieval vibe.

– St. Michael’s Cathedral and crypt: the city’s defining basilica, whose layered past and medieval crypt details map Veszprém’s history.

– St. George’s Chapel: an ancient shrine in the castle’s core, accessible only with a guide.

Tours start in front of the Biró–Giczey House; current times and any changes appear in the events calendar.

Free Exhibitions at the Biró–Giczey House

All exhibitions are free during opening hours:

– Thistle and Lily – Flowers of the Magdalens: the 2025 Exhibition of the Year winner, presenting Mary Magdalene through artifacts, prints, and contemporary reflections, enriched by the thoughts of Blessed Mária Magdolna Bódi.

– Pantry Exhibition – Details from the Cathedral’s Past: Baroque objects, liturgical pieces, and 100-plus-year-old photographs.

– My Head Isn’t a Chapter House: an interactive show explaining who canons were and how Veszprém’s chapter worked.

– Archaeology Exhibition: the Castle Hill’s evolving settlement history and finds, presented with striking installations.
