Stand-up, Fridays, and Mother’s Day

On April 29, comedian Péter Felméri performs Kincugi, hosted by Dániel Said, at the Dumaszínház in Egressy (tickets 4,490–5,490 HUF ≈ 12.10–14.80 USD). May Fridays kick off with Hangos Péntek at a bistro—easygoing nights of conversation, drinks, and shifting styles from funk and house to techno, retro, or requests—returning May 1, 15, 23, 29, June 5, and 12.

May 3 brings Mothers in the Folk House (Édesanyák a tájházban): a Mother’s Day treat inside the folk costume doll collection, where kids and adults craft felt keepsakes for mom—or themselves.

Ócsa Cultural Days Turns 50

From May 8 to June 5, ÓKN 50 celebrates a sparkling past and living present with a month of music, literature, theater, health, sports, faith, and fun—from rock to opera, folk to popular, and contemporary genres. The opening night on May 8 revisits the festival’s birth with a stage talk featuring Anna Földiné Hajdu, who envisioned it 50 years ago, plus an acoustic opener by Attila Kökény and Viktor Rakonczai.

Engines, Beats, Mushrooms

May 9 compresses motor culture and music into one: Benzingőz Festival & Ladies’ Lounge – Ócsa Motorcycle and Car Meet starts with a town parade, then a 1 p.m. rock-fueled, dance-ready, gasoline-scented afternoon outside Egressy. After dark, Benzingőz AFTER flips the floor with Purebeat and Ramit.

Prefer forests to fuel? Also May 9, join mushroom expert Lajos Boros of the Hungarian Mycological Society for a mushroom identification hike (gombaismereti túra). Arrive by car; the group caravans to the site, identifies species, and, where allowed, gathers edibles. Tickets are online only.

Health, Birds, and Opera

May 10 puts women’s well-being in focus with Health Is Wealth (Az egészség kincs)—a full day of talks and demos for body–mind balance and everyday know-how. The same day on the Selyem-rét nature trail, Bird and Tree Day (Madarak és fák napja) follows nesters: check installed boxes, peek at chicks, and learn about bird ringing if the brood allows. The tour starts with a minimum of 10 participants.

May 11 brings opera back to the Ócsa Reformed Monument Church (Ócsai Református Műemlék Templom) with a gala evening honoring a cherished local tradition—once led to great acclaim by József Gregor. The memorial concert features soloists of the Hungarian State Opera, reviving the spirit of those legendary nights in the church’s resonant space.

Poetry, Teens, Young Musicians

On May 12, On the Wings of Words (SZAVAK SZÁRNYÁN), a verse and prose talent search, spotlights anniversary-year Hungarian authors like Zoltán Zelk, Éva Janikovszky, Lajos Kassák, and Gyula Illyés, but any poet or writer is welcome. On May 13, Poetry at Any Price (VersMindenÁron) turns literature into live energy for Ócsa’s Bolyai János High School (Bolyai János Gimnázium) students as actor Áron Sövegjártó fires up classic and contemporary poetry—free as part of ÓKN 50. On May 14, students from the Ócsa division of the Muses Art School (Múzsák AMI) take the Egressy stage for a chamber concert that meets talent with encouragement.

Rock Poetry in Sacred Stone

On May 15, Aranyakkord—Kiss Tibi of Quimby with Gábor Vastag and Andor “Ufo” Gábor—fills the Árpád-era church with intimate, image-rich songs. The same night, Hangos Péntek rolls again for bistro beats and chats.

Spring Fen, Waldorf Dolls, Science Café

May 16 explores The Wonders of the Spring Fen (A tavaszi láprét csodái) in protected corners of the Ócsa Landscape Protection Area (Ócsai Tájvédelmi Körzet): orchids in bloom, the origins of fens, their species, and birds from perching songsters to hunting raptors. Tickets online only. That afternoon, the Waldorf Doll Workshop (Waldorf babaműhely) opens a monthly hands-on session for crafting unique handmade dolls at Egressy. Later, OPKE Café Evenings (OPKE Kávéházi esték) hosts science ambassador Balázs Boncsarovszki on curiosity, research, and a young scholar’s path, in conversation with OPKE president Katalin Pappné Hajdu. Also on the 16th: a small-field football tournament at the city pitch.

Herbs, History, and Digital Skills

On May 17, Nature’s Pharmacy (A természet gyógyszertára) answers which plants are edible, toxic, or medicinal, how to recognize them, and how old uses compare to today. In part two, make tea and a remedy (cream or medicinal honey). Recommended from age 12; online tickets only. The same day, Premonstratensians in Ócsa (Premontreiek Ócsán) spotlights the Premonstratensians in the Reformed Monument Church.

May 18–20 brings digital education for seniors. May 22 features an author–reader meetup. May 23 welcomes Classics as Guests (Klasszikusok vendégségben) and another round of Hangos Péntek.

Laughs, Debate, and Theater

On May 27, László Lakatos hits Egressy with I’m Here (Megjöttem), supported by Oliver Wolf (tickets 7,090–9,090 HUF ≈ 19.10–24.50 USD). That afternoon, the 2nd Participatory Forum invites Ócsa’s seniors to a roundtable on making the city more livable and connected. On May 29, Seethaler Theater Evenings (Seethaler Teátrumi Esték) presents A Killer Wedding Night (Hullajó nászéjszaka), a two-act comedy (2×50 minutes) by the HeArt Company (HeArt Társulat) about modern app love, a mysteriously fatal bride, and a family racing to stop disaster—skirting the fine line between care and paranoia, love and madness. A Hangos Péntek edition caps the night.

Open Cellars, Kids’ Day, and Honors

On May 30, ÓKN 50 and Orbán Day Open Cellars (Orbán-napi Nyitott Pincék) take over the Öreghegy Cellar Row from 10 a.m. with all-day programs and open doors. May 31 is for Children’s Day (Gyereknap). June 4 marks the Day of National Unity with a commemoration, while June 5 celebrates Teacher’s Day and the city’s award ceremony—plus another Hangos Péntek.

June Highlights and Summer Start

June 12 brings comedian Anett Kormos with Women Have No Sense of Humor (A nőknek nincs humora) at Egressy (tickets 8,900 HUF ≈ 24.00 USD), and a Friday night Hangos Péntek. Late June starts the Folk House Summer Day Camp (Tájházi nyári gyerektábor), a day camp for kids aged 6–12 at the folk house, running June 29–July 3. Weekly free clubs continue straight through July as Ócsa cruises into summer with community at its core.
