May 1: Faith’s Path I with Dr. István Takáts

Friday, May 1, 3:00 p.m. A new, multi-part sacred tour series called Faith’s Path, led by Dr. István Takáts, archiepiscopal vicar general, launches with a deep dive into how sacred space “speaks.” Framed by the Gospel line “I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout” (Lk 19:40), the walk explores how architecture and art reflect the joy of “God with us” and point beyond the visible world.
The route starts at Saint George Chapel, a site of Christian presence predating the Hungarian Conquest and historically linked to initiation through baptism. Tradition holds that Prince Saint Emeric made his vow of chastity here, marking a place of total dedication to God. From there, the group proceeds to Saint Michael Cathedral Basilica to focus on the liturgical space and symbolic system of the church and crypt: how we “arrive” at God, the stages of that journey, and how the mystery of our existence is revealed in stone and fresco.
Next comes the double-level, beautifully preserved medieval Gizella Chapel, followed by a rare stop at the archiepiscopal private chapel, almost never open to the public. The tour closes in the former grand dining hall of the Archiepiscopal Palace, where the vicar unpacks the hidden message of the ceiling fresco. Further dates in the series: July 2, August 8, and October 20. Participation is free but requires prior registration.

May 1: Saint Seraphim of Sarov Male Choir in Concert

Friday, May 1, 7:00 p.m., Saint Michael Cathedral Basilica. Veszprém welcomes distinguished guests of Serbian and Russian Orthodox sacred music as the Saint Seraphim of Sarov Male Choir performs a free evening concert. This professional vocal ensemble, active for over three decades, regularly sings on opera stages and with top-tier choirs, promising a polished, immersive program.
Their international track record includes appearances across Europe, the United States, and Australia—among them the Sydney Opera House. Centered on Serbian and Russian Orthodox liturgical chants and church songs in the Orthodox tradition, their repertoire also branches into other genres for a richly textured musical journey. Admission is free.

May 7: Gizella Day Organ Gala

Thursday, May 7, 7:30 p.m., Saint Michael Cathedral Basilica. The next Várhegyi Organ Evenings date aligns with Gizella Day, spotlighting organ and voice. Organist András Lakner Bognár (Szombathely, Cathedral of the Visitation) joins vocalist Gabi Gál for a joint concert that pairs the sonority of the concert organ with the nuance of the human voice in a festive setting.
Tickets are available at the Biró–Giczey House box office and on site before the concert. Prices: 2,500 HUF, students/seniors 1,500 HUF, season pass (7 concerts) 13,000 HUF.

May 8: Gizella Day Prayer in the Gizella Chapel

Friday, May 8, 7:00 p.m. At the initiative of Archbishop György Udvardy, a new Gizella Day prayer will honor Blessed Queen Gizella, wife of Saint Stephen and patron-builder of Saint Michael Cathedral Basilica. Held in the Gizella Chapel—further elevated in significance by the Gizella relic placed here by Bishop Ignác Koller—the one-hour devotion offers a quietly intimate atmosphere with limited capacity due to the site’s constraints. Registration is required. Note: no seating can be brought into the chapel; attendees should be able to stand for the full hour.

May 9: Youth Catechism Meetup—Play, Community, Faith

Saturday, May 9, all day, Veszprém. On Blessed Gizella’s feast day, the Archdiocese hosts a full-day youth catechism gathering mixing worship, games, challenges, and community-building. After registration and a joint Mass, participants share lunch, then rotate through skill-based and sports activities, crafts, and moments of spiritual reflection. Highlights include an altar server mission, the Magdi Walk, lively quizzes, and Caritas-themed empathy workshops. The day wraps with an award ceremony and final blessing, aiming to let young people not only learn about faith, but live it together with joy. Sign up through catechists. “Come, test yourself, collect experiences, and be part of a special day!”
