The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter, declared a Hungarikum in 2014, has grown into Pécs’ creative heartbeat—a place where babies giggle in their first theater, teens tinker with science, and grandparents waltz at senior dance nights. On May 1–2, 2026, it becomes a full-on playground for minds of all ages, with hands-on shows, space adventures, crafty workshops, theater, and live music. The address to remember: 7600 Pécs, Zsolnay Quarter.

When, where, what

Across May 1–2, you’ll find family programs packed into the Zsolnay Quarter. Curiosity meets the cosmos with three planetarium-style favorites: Place in the Universe (May 1–2), Journey Across the Starry Sky (May 1–3), and Solar Flares, Supernovae, Black Holes – The Exciting Life and Death of the Sun and Other Stars (May 2). From awe-inspiring space visuals to down-to-earth tinkering, the Quarter turns long weekends into memory factories.

Science sparks, clay tales, folded tiles

Varázsóra sessions (Magic Hour), running May 1–2, bring science alive with show-and-tell demonstrations that make physics playful—think electricity, light, and motion with a flourish. On May 2, Mázba zárt mesék (Tales Sealed in Glaze) opens the door to the Zsolnay ceramic legacy through storytelling with shiny finishes and warm clay, perfect for kids who want to see how stories can live in porcelain. Also on May 2, the Csempehajtogatás – notebook-cover workshop teaches folding and pattern play inspired by tile motifs; participants craft distinctive notebook covers to take home.

Saturday suds and city culture

Every Saturday is beer day in Pécs: Fedezd fel a Pécsi Sörfőzdét! (Discover the Pécs Brewery!) offers guided brewery tours and tastings on May 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30; then June 6, 13, 20, and 27; and July 4 and 11. Learn the city’s brewing story sip by sip. Pair that with the Quarter’s rolling weekly program guides—Pécs Weekly and Zsolnay Quarter Weekly—appearing April 27–May 3, May 4–10, May 11–17, May 18–24, May 25–31, then weekly through June and into July. Pick your path: exhibition hops, music nights, kids’ clubs—you name it.

Stage lights on

The Pécsi Nemzeti Színház (National Theatre of Pécs) runs performances May 2–10 and May 12–23, then May 26–June 5. Tickets range from 3,500 to 8,900 HUF (about 9.60–24.40 USD). On May 22, comedy fans can catch Michael Cooney’s Nicsak, ki lakik itt?! (It Runs in the Family) for 8,900–9,900 HUF (24.40–27.10 USD). The same night, Quimby 35 celebrates 35 years of the cult band, tickets 9,990–11,990 HUF (27.40–32.90 USD). Later in the year, classical and crossover heavyweights land: Gergely Rákász – Mozart on September 24 (5,990–7,990 HUF; 16.40–21.90 USD), Jövőre Veled Ugyanitt! (Same Time, Next Year) on November 5 (5,900 HUF; 16.20 USD), and Queen Symphonic Live on November 16 (9,800–14,800 HUF; 26.80–40.50 USD). November 18 brings Tvrtko – Csernobil 40, an exclusive lecture (7,900 HUF; 21.60 USD), followed by Vivaldi: The Four Seasons by candlelight on November 19 (12,900–14,900 HUF; 35.30–40.80 USD).

Big sky energy

Space lovers: pencil in Utazás a Marsra (Journey to Mars) on May 3. And if you missed the May 1–3 shows, keep an eye out—the Quarter often reloads its cosmic calendar. The three-part suite—Place in the Universe, Journey Across the Starry Sky, and Solar Flares–Supernovae–Black Holes—explores everything from neighborhood constellations to stellar life cycles. The joy is in discovery; the result is kids who can point out Orion and adults who suddenly remember why they loved science class.

Stay the night, make a weekend of it

If you’re turning the programs into a getaway, Pécs has stays with character. The four-star Adele Boutique Hotel sits in a 19th-century protected building where heritage meets sleek interiors. By the cathedral, the Barbakán Hotel offers two-, three-, and four-bed rooms plus a conference hall and underground parking. Looking uphill? Bagolyvár on Havihegy blends folk-art-decorated rooms with six wine-inspired suites and panoramic views over Pécs toward Zengő, alongside a homestyle restaurant heavy on traditional Hungarian dishes and sweets. For villa-district calm five minutes from forest trails and the city center, a family-run guesthouse near the Zoo and Mandulás Park (playgrounds, firepits, trails to the TV tower) even offers free guided hikes for groups.

In the center, Boutique Hotel Sopianae pairs a heritage façade with modern interiors and personable service. Hikers find the Büdöskúti key house between Remete-rét and Orfű—12 beds along the Blue Trail (KÉK) and Green Cross trails, 800 meters off the road. An apartment hotel near the UNESCO Early Christian Necropolis and Cathedral brings you steps from Pécs’ Museum Street. For monastic charm, a fully renovated Baroque former convent of the Canonesses of Our Lady (circa 1870) hides modern lodging behind its historical exterior. Another central hotel sits in a quiet patch 1,640 feet from the Knowledge Centre and Kodály Centre, with the old town’s Mediterranean streets a short stroll away.

Eat, sip, repeat

In the Rose Garden park, a street-food bistro and café keeps things laid-back with good coffee and easy bites. Angyali Kísértés Csokoládé tempts with handmade chocolates, bonbons, and homestyle cakes. A friendly local eatery serves feasts fit for family catch-ups or match nights—breaded, grilled, or stuffed meats; brassói diced pork; fish; oven-baked specialties; risottos; flatbreads; and pizzas galore, plus ample salads, soups, and desserts. A classic downtown kitchen rotates daily menus with fair prices—breakfast starts at 8 with frothy coffee, sandwiches, house pogácsa, and rolled strudels; they also handle receptions on- or off-site.

The Aranykacsa Restaurant (Aranykacsa Étterem) channels local ingredients and modern technique in a warm setting. Head to the Vinárium for tastings; the Tüke room for casual drinks and meals; the Zsolnay room for family or protocol dining; and the upstairs Dakk hall and garden for weddings, banquets, and birthday bashes.

Pack your curiosity. From stargazing to glaze-painting, Pécs’ Zsolnay Quarter turns early May into a two-day festival of imagination—and keeps the cultural engine humming all spring and beyond.
