
The Margaret Island Open-Air Stage (Margitszigeti Szabadtéri Színpad) on Budapest’s Margaret Island is rolling out its most ambitious summer yet. From May through September, the Margaret Island Summer Festival (Margitszigeti Nyári Fesztivál) packs more than 70 events into the country’s longest, most eclectic cultural season, mixing homegrown and international stars, lavish staging, and big, open-air sound. The program speaks to every generation, with premieres across genres and plenty for families, concert lovers, and opera diehards.
Spring Warm-up: Jazz, Film, Family Days
May lights up with Uncle Ricsi’s Playhouse: Spring Is Here (Ricsi bácsi játszóháza: Itt a tavasz) on May 10, before swinging into VASOVSKI SYMPHONIC (May 16) and Margit Garajszki – Silvester Lavrík: Bartók and The Wooden Prince (Bartók és A fából faragott királyfi) on May 17. Jazz masters flood the island: KURT ELLING (May 22), the three-day JAZZ and WINE Festival (JAZZ és BOR Fesztivál) with concerts and tastings (May 22–24), MARIO BIONDI (May 23), and THE WONDERFUL HUNGARIAN JAZZ (A CSODÁLATOS MAGYAR JAZZ) with László Attila Fusion Circus, the Budapest Ragtime Band, and the Easy Jazz Band (May 24). Families get the Görbetükör Theatre: King Matthias Among the Stars (Görbetükör Színház: Mátyás király a csillagok között) on May 24, The Lion King film concert with the Danubia Orchestra (Danubia Zenekar) led by Stefan Geiger (May 30), the interactive kids’ day Heroes of the Savanna (A Szavanna Hősei) on May 30, and the Majorka Theatre: Children’s Bridge (Majorka Színház: Gyermekek hídja) puppet show on May 31.
June Powerhouse: Symphony, Jukebox, Orff
The National Philharmonic opens on June 4 with soloists Vadim Repin and János Balázs. Then: Andrea Szulák (June 6), Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox – The Future Is Vintage Tour 2026 across two nights (June 10–11), Queen Symphony & Concert Show (June 13), Cheerful Symphonists (Vidám Szimfonikusok) on June 15, and Carl Orff’s Catulli Carmina/Carmina Burana (June 17). The Danube Carnival Gala – International Cultural Festival (Duna Karnevál) on June 19 and EDDA Művek Symphonic (June 20) keep the energy high. Opera arrives with backstage tours (June 25, 27) and premieres of Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana (Parasztbecsület) and Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci (Bajazzók) on June 25 and 27.
Summer Peaks: Musicals, Dance, Verdi
Anna Karenina the musical runs July 3–4 with backstage access both days. DJ Bootsie & Heureka Pop Orchestra’s Symphotronic drops July 9. The BERD Dance Ensemble bursts with beauty and boundless energy on July 11, plus a backstage visit. Verdi’s Il trovatore (A Trubadúr) premieres July 23 and 25, both with behind-the-scenes tours.
Late-Summer Hits: Wonderland to Nabucco
Wildhorn–Murphy’s Wonderland plays July 31 and August 1, each paired with a backstage tour. Leander Symphonic Choir (Leander Szimfonik Kórus) on August 6 precedes a mellow A SUMMER EVENING (EGY NYÁRI ESTE) with Attila Kökény & Viktor Rakonczai (August 8). Verdi’s Nabucco storms in on August 13 and 15. Heritage blazes on August 19 with Masterpieces (Mesterművek) and the 100-Member Gypsy Orchestra Concert Orchestra (100 Tagú Cigányzenekar Concert Orchestra). Amadeus Live film concert mesmerizes on August 22, then Róbert Szikora and R-GO (Szikora Róbert és az R-GO) salute in memoriam Miklós Fenyő on August 29.
Final Flourish: Gospel, Bar, EDDA Musical
