May Kicks Off With History and Humor

May 7 opens with Szoták Attila’s talk on the ministerial career of Kuno Klebelsberg, the jurist-turned-MP who briefly served as interior minister before nearly a decade as minister of religion and public education, leaving behind significant cultural and educational development.
On May 8, Dumaszínház comes to the Csigaház with Megjöttem, Lakatos László’s solo night, with Oliver Wolf as the opening act, 6:00–8:00 p.m. Tickets run from $18.40 to $18.40.

Walk the Past, Mark New Beginnings

Building on last year’s hit Heritage Walk (Örökségséta), a new guided local-history tour returns to Kistarcsa Public Cemetery on May 10, now expanded to a three-hour deep dive. The same day brings a Birth Bench (Születéspad) dedication, a community marker for new life and belonging.

Hungarian Hounds and Living Heritage

On May 14, historian Gergely Bödők spotlights the Transylvanian Hound (Erdélyi kopó), a storied Hungarian scent hound with the smallest population among national breeds. Expect a window into past and present hunting scenes few still practice, and a look at daily life with this Hungarikum. Working and obedience demos like recall and stay are on the program.

Festival Season: Kistarcsai Days

The 29th Kistarcsai Days (Kistarcsai Napok) takes over May 15–17, with exhibitions continuing to May 24. The exhibition opening happens Friday at 7 p.m. in the Simándy József Primary School atrium—everyone’s invited. The Kistarcsa Cultural Association curates the shows, open May 16–17 from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Simándy School, showcasing local creativity and heritage across two bustling days.

Touch, Grit, Play

May 21 brings Szűcsné Göblyös Erika on children’s massage through the lens of polyvagal theory: a gentle, touch-based method that supports physical and emotional development, reduces stress, improves sleep, and deepens parent-child bonding while easing the nervous system and boosting mobility.
Adventure follows on May 28 with Tamás Rist and the Budapest–Bamako rally story. As Mali grew unsafe, Freetown in Sierra Leone became the finish line. The route spans more than 5,592 miles, and across Africa’s battered roads, getting there is anything but simple.
May 31 doubles up with Children’s Day and Heroes’ Day commemorations—play and remembrance side by side at month’s end.

June: Memory, Miles, and Sweet Wine

June 4: László Nagy unpacks Trianon—signed June 4, 1920, at the Grand Trianon in Versailles, cleaving two-thirds of historic Hungary’s territory and compelling a peaceful settlement with occupying Czechoslovak, Serbian, and Romanian forces in Upper Hungary, Transylvania, and the Southern Lands.
June 5 marks a remembrance of Miklós Király.
June 11, Erzsébet Pancsor maps out the Blue Trail (Kéktúra): no age limit, no ticking clock—once you stamp in, you can take a lifetime to finish. It’s not an extreme trek; anyone can do it with sensible gear, and the rewards are constant, view after view.
June 18, Ildikó Obsitos serves wine jam (borlekvár). It carries the scent and flavor of wine without alcohol, a treat even for non-drinkers and a delight for wine lovers who want those notes in food. Made like traditional jam, but from wine instead of fruit.
June 20–21, Kistarcsa artisans exhibit their work, a showcase of local craft and handmade flair.
June 25, Ágnes Kóczián tours The Many-Colored Peru: from Inca legacies to Amazonian jungles with tales from Lima, Cusco, and Iquitos after a three-week journey.

Autumn Culture and Commemoration

September 14–20 is KIKE Cultural Week, with the Görhöny Festival and a new Heritage Walk (Örökségséta) anchoring the program. October 10 stages a National Evening. From October 23–25, a special exhibition marks the 70th anniversary of the revolution, and on December 28, the city gathers for a World War II commemoration.

Eat Like the Elders Did

Expect honest Hungarian flavors done the old way—no frills, just time, heart, and top ingredients, the kind of cooking grand ladies swore by. Clean, faithful tastes our ancestors would recognize.
