Where and when
Everything happens at the Zsilip Center, 1137 Budapest, 13th District, Újpesti Embankment (Újpesti rakpart) 1. May highlights include Friday evening children’s Shabbat welcomes on May 8, May 15, and May 22, plus the Zsiliputi Jewish Sunday School on May 10, May 17, and May 24. Friday’s “Little Friday” for kids and grown-ups
“Péntekecske péntek este” turns Friday night into a two-track welcome to Shabbat. While adults listen to Rabbi Glitzi’s teaching in the synagogue, children head to the Zsiliputi playhouse for a guided, playful session with a madricha. The kids’ program weaves in the weekly Torah portion, Shabbat, the current holiday, and plenty of pictures and games. Attentive listeners get gifts, and yes, there’s even a raffle. The Zsilip team keeps it short, sweet, and spirited: a mini Shabbat welcome designed so the whole family can learn something new as the candles are lit and the week winds down. The invitation is warm and simple: bring the whole family and let everyone learn on Shabbat.
Sunday School returns, leveled by age
The Zsiliputi Jewish Sunday School (Zsiliputi Zsidó Vasárnapi Iskola) is back—renewed in name and energy—inside the two-level playhouse and study spaces of Zsilip. Hundreds of children who once spent Sunday mornings here still talk about the shared games and playful learning that shaped their weekends. Now a young, enthusiastic team welcomes every child and teen aged 4 to 14 from 10:00 to 12:30, with sessions split by age group so everyone learns at the right pace and with the right peers.
What kids do, what sticks
Activities are hands-on and tuned to the calendar. Together the groups:
– prepare for upcoming holidays,
– learn about mitzvot,
– explore Jewish traditions,
– and absorb the values meant to accompany them through life.
Whether you’re little or a full-on teen, already eyeing youth-leader life or approaching Bar/Bat Mitzvah, the Sunday School is built for you. The program’s tone is upbeat, its goals clear: teach through joy, ground with values, and send kids home buzzing with stories they can’t wait to retell.
