A Sunday institution in the Káli Basin, the Liliomkert Market in Káptalantóti throws open its gates every week year-round, from 7:00 to 14:00. Tucked into one of the most gorgeous corners of the Balaton Uplands, at 8283 Káptalantóti, Petőfi St. 1 (Petőfi u. 1.), this now nationally loved producers’ market was dreamed up and created by biologist-engineer Ildikó Harmathy after a simple friendly chat sparked the idea. It’s grown into a beloved meeting place for makers and shoppers who happily travel from far away just to be here.
Come Hungry, Leave Happy
Arrive with an empty stomach. Wandering the stalls without tasting is nearly impossible: baskets hide flaky pork cracklings and cheese scones, pyramids of fragrant caraway crescent rolls tempt from afar, and piping-hot, sour-cream-slathered, wood-oven-baked flatbread (kemencés kenyérlángos) slides from the oven straight into eager hands. Shoppers can sample widely, then buy directly from the people who made it—fresh, quality goods with a handshake and a chat.
What You’ll Find
The range is broad and carefully made: farmhouse cheeses; fresh cracklings (töpörtyű) and ham; syrups and preserves; fresh and dried fruits; home-baked breads and pastries; strudels in all sorts of flavors. Drinks run from homemade syrups to pálinka and local wines. Crafts include carvings, handmade ornaments, white ceramics scented with lavender and rose, and one-of-a-kind gifts. There’s also a trove of antiques: old objects, books, and curious finds.

The market is busy—especially late morning—so come early if you like elbow room. Bring cash, since not every vendor takes cards.
