Eger is bursting into late-spring mode with a packed calendar that jumps from organ thunder in the Basilica to moonlit nightingale walks, pop-up art shows, and wine-soaked hikes among Kadarka vines. From May 11 to June 7, the historic city flips between high culture, local flavor, and easygoing fest vibes across multiple venues, squares, and the storied Valley of the Beautiful Woman (Szépasszonyvölgy) wine valley.

Stage, Screen, and Late-Night Culture

Operetta royalty lands on May 17 as Marika Oszvald brings A tűzről pattant, a high-spirited gala loaded with humor, cartwheels, and evergreen hits. Theater keeps the flame alive with Túl éles on May 24, a tense, funny, and brutally honest dive into burnout and fragile relationships set in the shadow of an overburdened health-care system. The Gárdonyi Géza Theatre (Gárdonyi Géza Színház) steps into the spotlight May 29–31 with the 26/27 GÁRDONYI // NYITOTT_TÉR FESTIVAL (NYITOTT_TÉR FESZTIVÁL), an audience-first introduction to the new season and artists through backstage tours, open conversations, and even a city bike ride. Look for Gárdonyi Unplugged, an open-mic-style reading night (May 29), the intimate cross-genre performance A nap udvara (May 29), the monodrama Pustol a hó, avagy Könnyű neked, Szarvas Józsi (May 29), Súlytalanság, a two-voice monodrama inspired by Viktor Pelevin’s Omon Ra (May 31), and a guided Kulisszajárás backstage tour on May 31.
Cinema fans get EKKE Mozi: Beléd estem, a 93-minute Hungarian rom-com on May 19, and Exhibition: Frida on May 26, a 90-minute English documentary animating Frida Kahlo’s art through her own words, diaries, letters, and interviews. On May 29, Uránia screens Kill Bill – The Whole Bloody Affair (A teljes véres történet), a 275-minute subtitled English-language mega-cut for diehard Tarantino fans.

Music from Basilica Pipes to Jazz Nights

Organ music rolls through the Basilica in short, 20–30-minute blasts of J. S. Bach, Franck, Boëllmann, Dubois, and Vierne (May 12–17; May 23–24; May 30–31), then returns weekly June 5–7 and beyond. Pentecost weekend swells with sound: a Pentecost Concert (Pünkösdi Hangverseny) at Felnémet’s St. Rosalia Church (May 21), a Svéd Mátyás & Báder Elemér jazz evening built for wine-sipping calm (May 30), and twin concerts titled Dessert (Desszert) by Andrea Malek and Adrián Kovács (May 30), reimagining Gershwin, Weill, Eisemann, and Fényes with a jazz and contemporary twist. Local band Back to Floyd modernizes Pink Floyd’s legacy on May 30, while Kóda invites a laid-back garden session on May 29. Kowalsky meg a Vega storms Agria Park’s Ornamental Garden (Díszkert) on June 4, and Apostol’s nostalgia-fueled We Can’t Live Without You! (Nem tudunk élni nélkületek!) plays June 5 with an encore the same night. Ticket ranges listed in forints convert to approximately $27–$33.

Wine, Food, Markets, and Nightingales

Eger’s wine heart beats loudest in the Valley of the Beautiful Woman (Szépasszonyvölgy). The Bohemian Celebration (Bohém Ünnep) on May 23 pairs premium gastronomy and cigars with live music at Wanda Wine & Scone House (Wanda Bor & Pogácsaház). A Pentecost cellar tour (Pünkösdi pincetúra) that day pours the region’s fresh white and rosé styles, all bright fruit and zesty charm. Hikers and sippers merge on two dates for Kadarka Vineyard Walk & Tasting (Kadarka Dűlőtúra & Borkóstoló), including a May 23 vineyard walk that meets the grape at its roots and ends with a panoramic dinner and guided tasting on Síkhegy. Food lovers and makers gather at Szak(ma)rket, a producer and craft market in the Civil Communities House (Civil Közösségek Háza) courtyard on May 21, where Heves County’s flavors, colors, and conversations spill over from stall to stall.
Nature fans get a soothing earful during Night of the Nightingales 2026 (Fülemülék Éjszakája 2026) on May 22, when Andrea Anna Pálfy leads a nightingale-listening walk. On June 6, Downtown Nature (Belvárosi természet) maps the city center’s living heritage: century-old historical gardens, award-winning trees, and a storied chestnut avenue recognized as “Tree Alley of the Year.”

Art, Photography, and Sacred Lives

Three giants of photography meet in Eger for All Three (Mindhárom) — a show spanning André Kertész, László Moholy-Nagy, and Robert Capa — running May 11–17 and again May 19–24, with major works foregrounding how each reshaped the medium. The moving traveling exhibition The Sacredness of Life (Az élet szent) honors St. Gianna Beretta Molla, patron of mothers, doctors, and unborn children, inside the Basilica May 18–24, May 25–31, and June 1–7. On May 18, Lajos Csontó, artist and dean at EKKE’s Faculty of Arts, gives a plain-language talk on contemporary art as part of a free public lecture series by Eszterházy Károly Catholic University and the István Dobó Castle Museum (Dobó István Vármúzeum). The 16th János Blaskó Painting Memorial Competition (XVI. Blaskó János Festészeti Emlékpályázat) opens its best-of exhibition May 18–23 and May 25–26 at the Béla Bartakovics Community House (Bartakovics Béla Közösségi Ház), saluting the late painter and former head of the Teacher Training College’s Drawing Department for two decades.

Castle Days, Kids’ Joy, and Hands-On Fun

Pentecost at Eger Castle (Egri vár) is big. Castle ReDesign Fest (VárReDesign Feszt), May 22–24, explores sustainability through talks, demos, workshops, and family games. Make recycled notebooks and handbags, learn from folk craft’s long tradition of reuse, and trace those methods through the museum collections. The family-friendly Come to the Museum (gyeREe-múzeum) returns May 23–25 with special castle programming. Kids take over on May 30 at Children’s Day (Gyermeknap) in Agria Park’s Ornamental Garden (Díszkert) from 10:00 to 16:00, then on May 31 at Children’s Day at Eger Castle (Gyermeknap az Egri várban) with a new interactive workbook Rock Adventure (Kövi kaland) at the info point, plus the beloved Sebő’s Dream (Sebő álma) family game to explore The History of Eger Castle exhibit. The city’s own Children’s Day (Gyermeknap) brings even more smiles May 31 across town.

Books, Talks, and Community Moments

On May 20, strength coach Attila Major unpacks daily fitness balance at Tittel Pál Library, free to attend. Book lovers can drop into Tímea Takácsné Csontos’s My Book: Terrifying Memories (Én könyv: Félelmetes emlékek) launch on May 21, complete with a gratitude wall and signings; Eliza Aux’s fantasy sequel The Golden Ink (Az Aranytinta) event on May 22; Petra Varga’s I Would Fly Over the Water (Repülnék a víz fölött) reading on May 27; and Iron Applause (Vass-taps) on May 28, an easygoing KOKA Gallery chat with silk/textile painter Gabi Varró and globetrotting tour leader Balázs Kiss over coffee and spritzers.
Elsewhere: a belly dance night with Samirah (May 23), a women’s Spring Detox yoga ritual with Rose Milk and guided journaling (May 23), a double-bill indie concert by Moodgarden & Disaster-Stricken Area (Katasztrófa Sújtotta Terület) (May 23), a Polish Folklore Evening revisiting Pieniny traditions with Małe Pieniny and Pienińskie Wiyrchy troupes (May 23), and a LEGO-fueled Brick Days (Kockanapok) expo and playhouse (May 23–24).

Auto Obsessions and Citywide Gatherings

Car culture revs up with a Škoda Meet (May 29–31) and the Auto Show Eger, June 5–7 at the City Sports Hall, spreading over more than 64,583 square feet with vintage beauties, race machines, and dealer-fresh tech for fans and pros alike. The multiplex at Agria Park keeps the popcorn flowing with current premieres through May 27. And on June 6, the hit musical comedy Me and My Little Brother (Én és a kisöcsém) returns to the stage—don’t miss the encore laugh line of the season.
