French, Myths, and a Digital Bridge Between Generations

May 19, Tuesday, stacks up quickly. At 4:30 p.m., the French Club in the Old Wing’s Dr. László Nagy Room invites you to “Venez Parler!”—a conversation session led by facilitator Ildikó Kenyeres. The same day at 5 p.m., storyteller Cecília Stenszky brings Norse myths and Celtic tales to life with adult-oriented live storytelling on the balcony off the event hall corridor (rain location: ZUG community space).
Earlier that afternoon, 4–6 p.m., grandparents and grandkids team up for Grandparent & Grandchild – Hand in Hand in the Digital World in the Children’s Library and American Corner. Expect stories, movement, megabyte moments, and a scavenger-style navigation through the library chasing “story numbers,” programming a robot bee, a dance duel, and a dash of 3D crafting. It’s free but requires advance registration; ages 6–99 welcome, grandkids with their grandparents.

Conversations in English and a Stroll Through History

The American Corner’s Conversation Club returns Thursday, May 21, 4:30–5:30 p.m., open to everyone from high school up. Whether you’re prepping for exams, need workplace English, or just want good conversation, the week’s topic is American music. Later that day at 5 p.m., go feet-on-the-street with Local History Walk: What the Houses Tell Us—an urban ramble through downtown Veszprém to meet buildings and their former residents. Gather at the library’s amphitheater; expect 1–1.5 hours of stories and façades. Motto: Let’s find our values—Home is here.

Miles Davis at 100: A Sonic Celebration

Tuesday, May 26 at 5 p.m., the Music Club Extra honors the centenary of Miles Davis in the Dr. László Nagy Room (Old Building, 1st floor). The program underlines how Davis didn’t just reshape jazz—he redrew the edges of classical and contemporary music too. Expect a curated listen spanning collaborators like Charlie Parker, Sarah Vaughan, John Coltrane, Gil Evans, Quincy Jones, and Marcus Miller. Host: Krisztián Kindler. Library holdings tied to the theme will be showcased, and photos may be taken at the event.

Preserving Memory: Jewish Cemeteries in Hungary

Wednesday, May 27 at 5 p.m., coordinator Miksa Winkler speaks on The Situation of Jewish Cemeteries in Hungary in the Kisfaludy Room. A grounded, timely look at heritage, maintenance, and memory work across the country.

Quiet Reading, Big Community

Friday, May 29, 4–6 p.m., Silent Book Club lands in ZUG. No assigned reading, no deadlines—just bring your current book, read in companionable silence, then share impressions if you feel like it. Meet fellow introverted book lovers, chat only if you want, and simply exist among pages.

Art Opening, Kids’ English, and American Vibes

Saturday, May 30 is busy. At 10–11:30 a.m., Kids’ Corner at the American Corner (3rd floor) brings playful English practice around movies—registration requested. At 2:30 p.m., the Small Gallery hosts the opening of painter Julianna Holányi’s exhibition Painted Moments. Zonta Club Veszprém president Erika Csirszka offers greetings; art historian Dr. Viktória Herth opens the show, with students from the Antal Csermák Primary Art School (Csermák Antal Alapfokú Művészeti Iskola) performing. Viewable during library hours through June 26. Also at 2:30–3:30 p.m., American Vibes gathers high schoolers who love using English outside class. Through games, quizzes, and interactive activities, dive into culture, traditions, and student life in the U.S.—less class, more community, low-key fun, high-key USA.

June Highlights: Founders, Summer Kickoff, and Camp

Conversation Club is back Thursday, June 4, 4:30–5:30 p.m., with a Founding Fathers topic. On Saturday, June 13, 10 a.m.–3 p.m., the Summer Kickoff Cavalcade fills the Children’s Library: 10 a.m.–12 p.m. make seasonal crafts with Éva Nemes, and 1–3 p.m. take on a family Heptathlon—an engaging, reading-development competition designed for all ages.
June 29–July 3, the American Corner runs the Red, White & Cool summer minicamp for teens aged 12–16, led by an American. It’s not a traditional English course—no textbooks, no dull lessons. Over five days and five themes—history, geography, culture, sports, innovation—teens speak English daily, build teams, create projects, present ideas, and grow confidence. And it’s free.

July’s Piano Glow: Music Meets Poetry

Saturday, July 18 at 7 p.m., MiniPianoFest transforms the library’s courtyard. Three standout pianists pour modern classical, slow melodies, and delicate harmonies into the open air, with poetry weaving between sets. Bring a drink, sink into a beanbag, sketch, read, or just drift as the city’s noise fades and time eases. In case of rain, the concert moves indoors; admission is free.
On the bill: CHARMEY (Marc Charmet), the Paris-born pianist-composer whose minimal, emotive voice spans influences from Erik Satie to Nils Frahm, with albums Monotonies (2024) and Délicates (2025, Siril Records). Founder of Budapest’s Le Salon de Musique, he often improvises, guided by the audience’s hush and the space. Poet Anna Bognár reads alongside, drawing on deep Italian literary scholarship and award-winning verse. Also appearing: Vienna-based pianist-composer and media scorer Flora Kapeller, inspired by Hania Rani, Tigran Hamasyan, Hildur Guðnadóttir, and Ludwig Göransson. And Andor Sanderson, contemporary pianist, leads a music–literature evening—piano ambient, quiet presence, inner travel—paired with readings by Mercédesz Kónya.

Where books, languages, music, stories, and community meet—Veszprém’s Eötvös Károly Library keeps summer wide open.
