The Buda Castle Synagogue (Budavári zsinagóga), reopened after 400 years, is welcoming the Jewish community back to the Buda Castle District at 26 Mihály Táncsics Street (Táncsics Mihály utca 26.), 1014 Budapest. On Friday, May 22, 2026, the historic sanctuary opens its doors for Shavuot with a full slate of holiday traditions and communal gatherings.
Holiday Schedule
On the second day of Shavuot, the community will gather to hear the public reading of the Ten Commandments, followed by a generous festive dairy meal. As evening falls, the synagogue will prepare for Shabbat with a warm, communal Kabbalat Shabbat service that brings the holiday and the weekly Sabbath together in a spirited close to the day.
Saturday Observance
The celebration continues on May 23 with morning prayers, after which the community will recite the Yizkor (Mázkir) memorial prayer to honor departed loved ones. Visitors can find related information on timing, nearby accommodations, and food and drink to round out the experience in the heart of Budapest’s 1st District.
