Budapest, corner of Balatoni Road (Balatoni út) and Szabadka Street (Szabadkai utca), District 22 (1223), rolls out the ultimate time warp this week: slip into a battered, beloved East German “paper jaguar” and relive the weekend road trips of an average family under state socialism. Blue-gray smoke, the unmistakable putter of a two-stroke engine, a smell you’ll never forget, and seats that redefine compact discomfort—this is the full Trabant experience.
Climb into a decades-old original—the kind of car folklore insists a horse once half-ate—and make your entrance to Memento Park in the most fitting way possible. Choose from multiple packages, all designed to immerse you in the flavors, fumes, and feelings of the era. Don’t wait until the last Trabant sputters out for good.
Trabant Transfer to Memento Park
Make a conspicuously stylish arrival at Memento Park any day of the week during regular opening hours. Private visitors and groups can book a Trabant transfer from anywhere within Budapest city limits. The price is 243.00 USD per Trabant and includes, for up to three people: door-to-door transfer within Budapest, admission to Memento Park, one drink per person at the Red Star Store buffet, and a guided tour inside the park. For more than three guests, additional cars are required; only the transfer fee is charged for the extra vehicles, while the guiding fee is covered by the first booking.
Combined Tours and Retro Add-ons
Turn the basic transfer into a deeper dive. Add a guided tour of Memento Park during or even outside regular hours—at dusk or after dark for maximum atmosphere. Tie in other era-appropriate stops, like a treasure hunt at the Ecseri Flea Market packed with ’60s and ’70s retro gems, or visits to memorial sites of the 1956 Revolution. Have a different idea? They’re happy to tailor the route.
1956 Revolution Memorial Ride
This route hits the flashpoints of the Hungarian Uprising: Kossuth Square in front of the Parliament, where the deadly volley erupted; Corvin Passage (Corvin köz), where the Soviet Red Army suffered its first defeat; and New Public Cemetery (Új Köztemető), final resting place of the revolution’s martyrs. Stories, context, and sobering history, all rattling along to that iconic two-stroke soundtrack.
Workers’ Movement Tour
Wander Fiumei Road Cemetery (Fiumei úti sírkert), stop at the Workers’ Movement Pantheon, and pay respects at the graves of Communist party boss János Kádár and his wife Mária Tamáska, as well as László Rajk, the Communist interior minister executed by fellow Communists. Then roll through a classic Socialist Realist housing estate—charms, flaws, and concrete poetry included.
The tour price is 243.00 USD per Trabant for 2.5–3 hours, covering up to three people: door-to-door Budapest transfer, informal conversation with a trained driver-guide, guided stops at sights and memorials, and admission fees where needed. For groups larger than three, book extra cars; only transfer fees are charged for additional vehicles. Add a Memento Park visit for an extra 62.50 USD per Trabant, applied to every car when the group exceeds three. With Memento Park included, plan for 3.5–4 hours.
Pöfögés: The Pure Trabant Buzz

Prices apply to groups of up to 15; above that, a second Trabant is recommended. Program length runs 60–90 minutes depending on group size and extras.
Team-Building With a Wink
Who is Vladimir, the Soviet double agent, hiding among? How many propagandists wear glasses? Does Lenin wear a cap while clutching one? Which statue towers highest? How many people fit in a Trabant? Who can drive one with eyes closed? What’s Stalin whispering to the future? Expect an hour to 90 minutes of cheeky challenges and outdoor games. Memento Park provides space, inspiration, and support on request.
