
Eger is packing mid-June with concerts, films, open-air shows, wine tastings, late-night museum adventures, and starry Szent Iván (Midsummer) magic from the city center to the castle walls. From June 7 to 25, every day brings something new: intimate poetry nights, Baroque fanfares, a cappella in the streets, vintage cars, and deep dives into Hungarian art and identity. Here’s what’s on and where to catch it.
Films, Theater, Poetry
June 16 brings EKKE Cinema’s Breakfast on the Mountain, a 95-minute French comedy (2023) in French with subtitles. The same day, actor Pál Mácsai throws open the door to his craft in Workshop Visit – Pál Mácsai’s Evening, a performance built from poems by Arany, Petőfi, Ady, Babits, Kosztolányi, Karinthy, Dsida, József Attila, Radnóti, Villon–Faludy, Nemes Nagy, Pilinszky, Orbán Ottó, Petri, Parti-Nagy, and István Kemény—performed and unpacked by Mácsai. Venue: Bartakovics Béla Community House, tickets $13–$13.
On June 20, Budapest Chamber Opera stages J. Haydn’s The Diva (Az énekesnő) at Bartakovics. That night the musical Made in Hungária (Made in Hungary) channels youth, love, and rebellion with bangers like Viva Rock and Roll, Csókkirály, and the title track. June 25 closes with Love Wildly (Szeressetek szilajon) – a József Attila night with Tamás Jordán, Kaláka, and Sebő, and Vass-taps, a relaxed chat with actors and local figures in the ivy-laced KOKA Gallery courtyard.
June 24 offers a blockbuster teaser: Supergirl gets a pre-premiere screening at Agria Cinema. On June 23, EKKE screens Heavenly Chaos, a 91-minute 2025 French comedy. Also on June 20: audience meetup and premiere of HOBO – Being on the Road Is Happiness (Úton lenni boldogság), a 93-minute 2026 Hungarian road movie at Agria Cinema.
Music Everywhere
On June 17, Singing on the Move sends harmonies through Eger’s historic core, with the Agria Mixed Choir halting the weekday rush with unamplified, heartfelt song. June 19 stacks the deck: Burlesque Acoustic Night reimagines favorites with the Cabaret Band plus keys; a terrace tasting celebrates Eger whites with five wines, savory pastries, and cheese; the Tercina Ensemble performs Song of Songs at the Farkas Ferenc Music School with actor Anna Györgyi—free entry; MisSH fires up a vacation-opening party at Broadway Monkey; Kárpátia rocks the open-air stage; and Brass on the Balcony floats from City Hall’s balcony on Dobó István Square, performed by the Academy of Music trombone quartet—free.
June 19–21, Basilica organ recitals run Fri–Sun (20–30 minutes, $5 each) with Bach, Franck, Boëllmann, Dubois, and Vierne. The Bükk Arts Days – Baroque Festival returns across standout Eger venues the same weekend. On June 21, The Praise of Beauty matinee by the Eger Symphony is free; Tower Music sounds from the Cistercian church balcony with the trombone quartet—free; and I Sing Thy Holy Name Without Ceasing (Szent nevednek éneklek szüntelen) presents Benedetto Marcello’s Psalms of David.
June 26 shifts to Kaláka Festival mode: Bea Palya delivers her intimate, liberating set; The Paul Street Boys (A Pál utcai fiúk) returns as a modern musical staging of Molnár’s classic; folk hero Pál István Szalonna and his band play and teach steps; Csík János és a Mezzo blend folk, jazz, and light music; Amor fati (founded by Fatima Szalay) explores folk–world crossovers. Twice on June 26, join Musical City Walks with the Kaláka ensemble guided by Botond Rázsi.
Museums by Moonlight
June 20 is the nationwide Museum Night’s 25th edition, and Eger goes all in. The Basilica, Ziffer Sándor Gallery, Tittel Pál Library, Valide Sultan Hamam ruins, Archbishop’s Palace Visitor Center, the Observatory and Science Experience Center, and Eger Castle all host special programs and openings. The Castle’s Dobó István Museum adds family-friendly activities and a new exhibition. Civil Museum Night joins for the third year with colorful community-led happenings. The Géza Gárdonyi Memorial House serves up Stories Locked in Flavors, a gastro-literary journey in the writer’s home. At Ziffer and the Castle, Glimmering Reality (Derengő valóság) is a memorial exhibition for Eger-born painter Ernő Nagy on his centenary.
Walks, Nature, Stars
June 18, at the Forest Stage: In the Footsteps of Woodpeckers dives into the birds’ role in forest ecosystems and human life with the Hungarian Ornithological Society’s Woodpecker Protection Section. Kids are welcome—quiet activities provided. June 18 also pours history: a Wine Walk at Eger Castle with the Szuromi Family Estate intertwines 16th-century tales and Eger’s legendary wines. June 19’s Moon Cycles tour is a night stroll blending architecture and lunar lore. June 20’s City Walk is a 90-minute primer on Eger’s story and icons. June 20 also launches the Beehive Stones Performance Hike (Kaptárkövek teljesítménytúra) across Bükkalja—choose 9, 19, or 31 miles with volcanic soils, cliff-carved beehive stones, and wine stops. On June 21, greet the sun with a mass Sun Salutation on Dobó Square for the International Day of Yoga, and more yoga events on June 20 highlight balance of body and mind.
Wine and Szent Iván Magic
June 20 on Síkhegy, multiple Tóth Ferenc Winery gatherings turn Szent Iván night into a ritual: the fire-dance troupe Lobbanáspont returns with a blazing show; a six-wine tasting led by Katalin Tóth debuts Egri Csillag 2025 and Superior 2024, Rhine Riesling Superior 2024, Kadarka Siller 2025, Kadarka 2024, and Várvédő Egri Bikavér Grand Superior 2022 from the Sík-hegy vineyard, paired with dishes by Fázis Koszt & Kávé. It’s a picnic, a firelighting, and a gathering under the Poplar to mark the shortest night—plus a cheeky Szent Iván Night Witch Walk framing the year’s most mysterious hours.
Markets, Classics, Vintage Rides
June 21’s Antique Fair floods the old town with stories stitched into furniture, books, porcelain, paintings, and curious treasures. That night, Vintage Car Rides rev their engines during Museum Night—period autos, dusk-lit streets, pop-up exhibits, and the chance to support vehicle heritage and community programs with each ride. On June 20, In the Footsteps of King Solomon (Salamon király nyomában) resounds in the English Ladies’ Chapel with the Savaria Baroque Orchestra.

Archery at the Castle
June 25–28, the HDH-IAA Historical Archery European Championship lands in Eger Castle—individual and national team contests amid Hungary’s iconic stronghold, with themed tours unpacking the fortress’s military past. A parallel international archery meet keeps the ramparts busy. And threading it all, the 46th Kaláka Festival turns Eger into a buzzing cross-arts carnival of music, verse theater, children’s shows, visual art, and a folk-art market.
Community and Alumni
June 26, the Eszterházy Alumni Wine Club welcomes graduates and locals as winemaker Dániel Korózs presents his lineup—another toast to Eger’s vineyards, and to a June that doesn’t know how to slow down.
