Debrecen throws open its doors on the shortest night of the year, blending summer solstice vibes and St. John’s Night (Szent Iván-éj) traditions with a citywide cultural adventure. On June 20, 2026, museums, galleries, churches, and community spaces team up for exhibitions, concerts, guided tours, hands-on workshops, family quests, and plenty of surprises. From 16:00 to 24:00, kids and families can dive into detective-style trail games across multiple venues, playing at their own pace. Pick up booklets at the Déri Museum, MODEM, and the Medgyessy/House of Literature for Selyemke és Modemke (ages 6–12). At the Reformed College Museum, chase Egy rejtett zászló nyomában (ages 6–12) or follow Fazekas Mihály nyomában (ages 6–99). Kickoff Highlight: City Hall Walk

At 16:00, a 60-minute guided tour at 20 Piac Street opens the timeline of Debrecen’s City Hall—its history, latest modernization, and the rooms where Lajos Kossuth and Franz Joseph once stayed, plus the former resting place of the Holy Crown. Capacity: 40.

Great Reformed Church: Music, Myths, Midnight Organ

The Great Reformed Church spins a sensory theme around flavor and melody. At 16:00, Tűvel és szeretettel varrva opens with the Tiszta Forrás embroidery circle. At 17:00, Ízek, imák, történetek az Úr asztalánál with Pastor István Oláh. At 18:00 and 19:00, A zene ízei blends fairy-tale spices with harp. Between 18:00–20:00, sample a Characterful Temple Burger. At 19:00, the Martin Brass Band paints sonic landscapes. An English tour starts at 20:00, Trinity Worship plays at 20:30, and a Midnight Organ Concert rockets from Bach to the Caribbean at 23:30.

Déri Museum: Street Beats, Sweets, and Sharp History

On Déri Square, 16:00–21:00 brings a folk playground; 17:00 the garrison band; 18:00 music students’ mini-recital; 19:00 the NemDeBár band; 20:30 Ágnes Kovács & Friends (Kovács Ágnes és Barátai); 22:00 a fire performance by Karmazsin and the Flaming Snails (Lángoló Csigák).

Inside, the Lajos Zoltai Room hosts a signed tour at 19:00 of MISKA és CÉCILE, diving into Mihály Munkácsy’s marriage with art historian Éva Irén Fodor. The café turns into a Törpe Tortagyár mini-bakery from 17:00–21:00, where kids craft and taste their dream desserts, with options for dietary intolerances.

In the Grand Hall: at 16:00, Tibor Juhász talks Magda Szabó’s flavors; 16:30, Mézescsók Cerberusnak with tastings; 17:00, medieval diet in Szepes; 18:00, the city’s legendary wheat bread with live baking context; 19:30, Feel the Steel, an interactive historical weapons demo in English; 20:00, Debrecen’s old tastes through Lajos Zoltai; 21:00, last meals of the condemned; 22:00, still lifes from the gallery. House of Literature & Medgyessy: Garden, Clay, and Kimchi

At 28 Péterfia Street, 16:00–24:00 brings guitar interludes, kids’ skill games, and the student production HOODIE – Vedd már le! Throw clay with Álmos Gál 17:00–21:00. In the Fazekas Garden, craft with educator Teodóra Tóth and browse the Szender Garden plant sale and micro-gardening tips 17:00–22:00. Talks range from The Unknown Mihály Fazekas and learning kimchi with Bence Szendrei to Magda Szabó’s flavors and Elek Szabó’s photographs. At 20:30, a roundtable on Magda Szabó readings; later, The Forgotten Tibor Szobotka; and a dive into the Várady–Szabó house history.

The temporary show Thirteen Swans (Tizenhárom hattyú) explores memory, family artifacts, and a never-written book, staging a dialogue between Magda Szabó and her father. Opening at 19:00 by writer-translator Noémi Kiss; tours follow 19:30–20:30 and 21:30–23:30. Elsewhere, János László guides through Kultúrállat, student graphics, and Walk with Jókai! At the Golden Bull Hotel (Hotel Arany Bika, 11–15 Piac Street), the military’s Night of Museums theme Hussar Virtue Then and Now (Huszárvirtus egykor és ma) spans 16:00–23:00 with kids’ museum edutainment, a Nádasdy Hussar unit showcase, and a 19:00 opening featuring the garrison band and the Debrecen Honvéd Folk Dance Ensemble. Watch a short film on Mihály Fazekas, explore 200 Years of Hussar Uniforms by Kossuth Prize-winning artist Győző Somogyi, handle WWI–WWII gear with cadets from the Károly Kratochvil school, and view soldier-artists’ works. Magda Szabó Memorial House: Spiced Stories and Song

At 35 Kossuth Street, a Spiced Guided Tour (Fűszerezett tárlatvezetés) 17:30–18:15 threads gastronomy through Magda Szabó’s work, tied to her Honey Kiss for Cerberus (Mézescsók Cerberusnak) and Debrecen’s famed gingerbread. Actors with Wooden Spoons (Színészek fakanállal) serves musical chats at 19:00–20:30 and 22:00–22:45 in the courtyard.
