when: 2026.07.05. (vasárnap)
where: 2000 Szentendre, Postás strand

On Sunday, July 5, 2026, swimmers once again take on the Danube from Szentendre to Budakalász in the Danube Bend (Dunakanyar), with the Open Water Tournament opening up one of Hungary’s most scenic river stretches. Whether you’re a first-timer hooked on water, a landscape-loving cruiser, an amateur, or a seasoned pro, this is the day to dive in. Expect a 4–5 km/h current, water at a friendly 73.4°F, a full navigation lock on race morning, and riverbanks you rarely see from this angle. If you swam it last year, you know the thrill. If you didn’t, it’s time.

What’s the Open Water Tournament?

OWT, Hungary’s Open Water Tournament, has been charting and celebrating the country’s waterways for six years, turning natural rivers and lakes into playgrounds for endurance and joy. The organizers first staged a downtown Danube swim back in 2016 during BUG, between the campuses of Corvinus (Közgáz) and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME). Since then, they’ve devoted their free time to building out this one-of-a-kind series. This year brings two OWT events for swim lovers, and the Szentendre–Budakalász course remains a headline attraction.

The Course: Szentendre to Lupa Island

Hundreds of swimmers will push off from Szentendre’s Postás Beach and head downstream to the finish near the Tadpole (Ebihal) snack bar on the Budakalász bank by Lupa Island. The route covers 5 km, marked every 500 meters by yellow line buoys and bright orange kilometer buoys to keep you on target. With the Danube’s summer flow helping you along and sightseeing built into every stroke, it’s a rare blend of nature and race-day buzz.

When, Where, How Much

– Date: July 5, 2026 (Sunday)
– Start: Szentendre, Postás strand (Postás Beach)
– Finish: Budakalász, riverside next to the Ebihal büfé (Tadpole snack bar)
– Distance: 5 km
– Entry fee: 16,000 HUF (about 44 USD)
The event is run and safeguarded by the Open Water Tournament team together with the Pest County Search and Rescue Service.

Registration and Start Procedure

At check-in, choose your pace group: fast, medium, or tourist. The launch order is reversed—slower swimmers start first, faster ones close the field—so everyone can find their rhythm in cleaner water and finish more or less together. You’ll receive a chipped wristwatch at registration; it’s activated at the start so your time is recorded at entry and exit. Drop your bags at the staffed cloakroom, grab a coffee at the neighboring Lido Sportcentrum, warm up, and then it’s go time from the sandy beach. Starts happen one by one, keeping things smooth and safe into the flow.

Finish Line Vibes

Swim through the FINISH (CÉL) arch by the Ebihal büfé, step out, and your time is recorded instantly. Medals are handed over on the spot. Then settle in for sun and recovery at the Ebihal, where “Uncle Jani” (Janibá) dishes out old-school zsíroskenyér—thick country bread with lard, onion, and a side of nostalgia. Shuttle buses wait about 200 meters from the snack bar entrance, looping continuously between Budakalász and Szentendre to get you back to race HQ for a change of clothes and results viewing. Times appear on Runtuning and are compiled post-race. The awards ceremony is at 13:30 at the event center.

Why This Swim Hits Different

– Flow assist: a 4–5 km/h current gives you a push from nature.
– Comfortable water: around 73.4°F in early July.
– Full navigation lock: boats pause, swimmers own the river.
– Scenic banks: the Danube Bend’s (Dunakanyar) lesser-seen shores up close.
– Community: a field that welcomes everyone from curious newcomers to performance chasers.

Make a Weekend of It in Szentendre

If you’re staying over, Szentendre serves up options for every taste. The Skanzen Hotel sits next to the Open-Air Ethnographic Museum and is the town’s largest-capacity stay. Bükkös Hotel & Spa welcomes guests 13 and up for a grown-up, wellness-forward city break. Cozy riverfront pensions and breakfast spots pepper the heart of town, with terrace views made for lazy mornings. Up in the Visegrád Hills, the Kő-hegy plateau and its mountain-hut-style Kő-hegyi Menedékház deliver alpine vibes without the altitude. Family-run guesthouses, downtown inns near Dalmatian Hill (Szamárhegy), and Danube-side hotels round out the mix, with options from snug doubles to two-room apartments with kitchens and garden terraces. Parking is commonly available on the street or in enclosed courtyards.

Eat and Celebrate by the Water

Post-race, Szentendre’s dining scene leans into tradition, stories, and a touch of the Mediterranean. From regional Hungarian plates to Serbian specialties, brunch with a Hungarian twist at Bistro 11, coffee corners on the Danube Promenade (Dunakorzó), and legendary spots like the Greek Jug (Görög Kancsó) on the historic lane linking the Main Square to the riverwalk—there’s a table for every appetite. Riverfront terraces bring the mood: sunset, pálinka, and a view. Some venues host private events if your crew wants to turn finishers’ medals into a party.

What’s Next on the OWT Calendar

– August 15, 2026: Lake Gyékényes (Gyékényesi-tó) swim
– August 29, 2026: Generali OWT Danube Crossing
Two more chances to keep your open-water groove rolling deep into summer.

One Last Note

Organizers reserve the right to change the schedule and program if conditions demand it. Keep an eye on the event channels for updates, then pack your goggles, bring your best river mindset, and meet the Danube where it’s at its most generous.
